Sunday Snippet: Your Move

Hello 2025. I truly hope this year is better than I expect it will be.

I have some goals for this year, and one is to finally launch my side project. I've been putting it off, and I think I finally figured out why. Instead of FOMO, fear of missing out, I have FOFU, fear of fucking up or, a kinder version, FOMU, fear of messing up. I need to get over that.

We're under a winter weather advisory and I have to leave super early in the morning to pick my oldest up from work. I'm debating whether I should fill up my tank now or just wait and do it on the way. We're only supposed to have an inch of snow, but I'm not sure about the freezing rain and ice. I'll monitor and decide soon.

Very light work week. I'm working on a readthrough of a series for a friend and I'm so excited for this project! I'm also hoping I have some new work starting this week. I have tentative dates in my calendar, but nothing set yet.

Had an okay week of viewing. I've been in a weird mood and haven't been watching as much as I could have. That said, I have been getting a lot of writing done so I'm not complaining.

Caught another episode of Elementary. Much happier with where Joan and Sherlock in this episode. The vibe is very different from the first two seasons, and I think I'm okay with that.

I started a Batman Beyond rewatch. I have a lot of love for this show and look forward to diving back in again.

Enjoyed another episode of Classic Rugrats. Once again, I didn't remember either of the vignettes, so I had fun watching.

Watched an episode of Mr. and Mrs. Murder. I hadn't seen any of this one and thoroughly enjoyed it. I think there's one episode left, and I'll have to find a new show to watch.

Almost through the season three premiere episode of London Kills. This could end up being a wild ride. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens.

That's pretty much it for the life update this week. Tonight's post is from Your Move, a novella that reunites a couple for a second-chance romance.

Here's the miniblurb:

Reilly Mounts returns to her hometown after an impulsive marriage and a divorce that's turning ugly. Caden Bromley, her high school flame, wants to pick up where they left off, but Reilly needs some time to figure out where he fits in her life … and she has to deal with her soon-to-be ex.

And a snippety peek…

Reilly plunged the mop into the soapy, hot water then swiped it over the faded vinyl flooring in the kitchen. "Nothing like a good old-fashioned clean out when I've got a lot to think about." Deep cleaning often helped corral the chaos in her mind.
She looked at the house she grew up in with new eyes. The place needed some major TLC. Some could be accomplished with cosmetic updates, new paint, some throw rugs, and a good polishing of the woodwork. She had the blueprint of how she wanted to display her product line in the two front rooms of the house. A small bedroom would transform into a treatment and consultation area and the kitchen would be for personal use. The small bathroom would be for clients if needed. The large room adjacent to the kitchen would eventually become a meeting area for classes and projects.
Reilly paused by the basement door. "I'll bring the downstairs kitchen up to code to make my product." Her gram used the space to can vegetables, make jam and jelly, and do all her holiday baking.
She dipped the mop back into the water again and started on another area of the floor. A rapid series of knocks sounded on the back door. Propping the mop against the wall, she carefully crossed the damp floor to answer. Twisting the knob, she tried to pull the door open, but the latch got stuck.
Sighing, she jiggled the knob. "Hang on. Give me one second." She yanked hard and the door jerked open to reveal Caden on the other side. "Um, hi." Equal parts surprised and embarrassed at the state of the house, she tilted her head. "Sorry. The door keeps getting stuck."
His lips twisted in a wry grin. "I can fix that. Hold on." He made a quick jaunt out to his truck and started back with a tool belt draped over his shoulder and small roll-up bag.
Reilly closed her eyes, letting memories wash over her. Her very first kiss had been on the covered patio. And Caden had been the one to provide the lip-lock. She took a moment to cherish that remembrance then focused on the here and now.
Caden set the bag aside and strapped the toolbelt around his waist. "This shouldn't take long." He pulled a screwdriver from its notch and started unscrewing the metal plate.
Reilly observed his actions, filing them away for later use. "Thanks. You really didn't have to do this." She leaned against the counter. "What brings you here?" Not that she minded having him drop by … she just hadn't expected to see him again today.
Caden glanced up from his work. "Got a hold of Cam. Said he'd call you on his way home and find room in his schedule to see you." He removed the metal plate and stopped down to look at the wood. "Gonna need to put an anchor in here. The wood isn't holding the screws securely anymore. That's why the latch sticks." He unrolled the bag and grabbed two anchors. "Cam said getting you set up as a corporation shouldn't be difficult. The divorce will depend on how messy things get." He met her gaze. "I didn't know what to tell him about that, but he has someone he can refer you to if needed."
Reilly shook her head. "Doug's not going to contest the divorce. This is a mutual decision." At least her soon-to-be-former spouse promised he'd sign on the dotted line. "He knows I want to live here and start over." Without the added stress of trying to fix something that broke a long time ago.
Caden twisted the screws and tugged on the plate. "That should do it. Let me check the door also." He moved inside the house and checked the knob. "Eh, I'll tighten this up also then you should be good to go … at least for a while." He cast his gaze around the kitchen. "What are your plans for the place?"
Reilly smiled. "I'm starting a homeopathy business. I'll be making and selling my product line here and online." She winced. "That means using a ton of elbow grease and TLC to get things ready. Most of my readily available capital will go toward bringing the basement kitchen up to code." She shrugged. "I'm not afraid of hard work but trying to make the upstairs into my residence while getting the store area down here ready is a bit daunting." And a wee bit overwhelming even if she couldn't wait to get started.
Caden cocked his head. "So, you got three bedrooms and a full bath upstairs, right?" He propped his shoulder on the door jamb.
Reilly nodded. "Yeah. I'll use one of the rooms as my office, one for a living room, and the other as my bedroom. The backstairs will make it easy to keep the kitchen as a personal space." She'd be going with the bare minimum upstairs until she got the store up and running.
Caden's head bobbed up and down. "Sounds like a solid plan. You've got good bones here with the house. Mainly fix-up stuff for the most part, right?"
Reilly lifted her chin. "I think so. I'll need to do some updating, especially this vinyl flooring, but that can wait for now." She glanced around the room, seeing her gram puttering around while cooking something wonderful.
Caden made a sound of agreement. "Small steps. Can't be easy coming back and living with the memories while trying to forge a new beginning at the same time."
Reilly's breath caught. "Yes, that's it. Exactly." He'd nailed the way she felt on the head. "It's like having one foot in the past and the other in the future and straddling the present makes me feel … vulnerable." Her eyes welled up and she blinked tears away. "I miss her. But I think she'd be happy I'm moving back." A laugh bubbled up. "I know she'd be thrilled about the divorce. She was never a huge Doug fan." A fact Wanda made clear anytime Doug accompanied Reilly home.
She should've listened to her gram and owned the mistake a long time ago.
Shaking her head again, she gave Caden a wobbly smile. "Anyway, thank you for calling Cam. I should let you get home." She started to reach for the door, not wanting Caden to leave at all.
But she really couldn't ask him to stay … not after everything he'd done for her today.
Why would he even want to stay? Especially when she walked away from him…

A bit of a longer peek this week. I'm so happy with how this scene came together.

That's it for this week. Happy reading!

Sunday Snippet: Your Move

More weird weather this week. And some great news for the daughter. She ended up with three scholarships and two awards for her sophomore year. Amazing!

Solid work week with ongoing edits on two projects. I'm doing some new nonfiction work and I'm enjoying it so much.

Pretty good week of television also. I finished up the second season of Snoopy in Space: The Search for Life. I'd be happy if they did another run of episodes with this show.

Caught an episode of Cuffs and actually enjoyed it a lot even though the personal lives of the characters are all falling apart.

Watched two episodes of Silent Witness. I'm beginning to really enjoy Jack's tenaciousness. He won't let go when his hunches are biting down hard.

Enjoyed two episodes of Classic Who. I'd forgotten how the quality of the show suffered so much during Seven's tenure, which isn't a bash on the actors. They do an excellent job considering what they're given to work with.

Finished up Aliens in Alaska and really enjoyed the season. Wouldn't mind if they did more later.

Caught two episodes of Hawkeye and I'm sold. Love the interaction between the characters and enjoy the overarching plot point. Great show.

Finished up the second season of Harrow and I enjoyed it so much. One thing that really hits hard is the fact that Harrow has now murdered two people and as much as I love the character, I kind of want him to suffer some consequences for his actions. We'll see if season three offers any up for him.

Watched the Peak Practice season seven finale. Looks like some big changes for the next season with a new location for the practice. I'm looking forward to seeing where things go.

Started a quirky series with The Laundry Guy. Enjoyed seeing what he uses to bring stained items back to life. I'm definitely going to learn a lot from this show.

Caught an episode of Blue Heelers and enjoyed it. Really feeling the topic of the week vibes during this season, but it's not deal-breaking.

Consumed another MasterClass with Neil deGrasse Tyson and liked learning about the scientific method. As with Nye, Tyson has a way of putting information out there that doesn't make me feel stupid.

Watched another episode of Young Wallander: Killer's Shadow. I'm very invested in this season already and I kind of love where things are going.

Enjoyed two more episodes of Classic Rugrats. This rewatch definitely lets me find my happy place.

Also caught another episode of Chicago Med and I'm kind of still hating the new head of the ED. We'll see if that continues. I love that Rhodes is actually on to Ava and isn't really being duped … yet.

That's pretty much it for the life update this week. Tonight's post is from Your Move, a novella that features a reunion romance that gets off to a shaky start.

Here's the mini-blurb:

Reilly Mounts returns to her hometown after an impulsive marriage and a divorce that's turning ugly. Caden Bromley, her high school flame, wants to pick up where they left off, but Reilly needs some time to figure out where he fits in her life … and she has to deal with her soon-to-be ex.

And a snippety peek…

Caden pulled into the alley behind Reilly's house and hopped out of the truck. "Should be okay to store this flooring on the patio." He grabbed four boxes and stacked them neatly close to the house.

Several more trips and he had the hardwood unloaded. He wiped his hands off and decided to surprise Reilly with an invite to a late dinner.

Pulling the back door open, he stopped in his tracks. Nothing prepared him for the sight greeting his eyes.

Reilly in a hot lip-lock … with her ex. Son of a bitch.

Stung, he backed out quickly, quietly closed the door, and stalked to his truck, burning mad. Yanking hard on the door handle, he started the engine and headed out before he even got the door fully closed. His hands white knuckled the steering wheel.

"What the hell was I thinking … getting involved with her again?"

He started for home but, at the last moment, stopped at the yard instead. Anger had adrenaline coursing through him and the barn had a heavy bag he could work out his aggression on.

Stripping off his shirt, he took a few minutes to slip on a pair of gloves. "I'm so stupid." Punch-punch.

He'd stepped back at her request. "But to give her time…" Punch-punch. "Not so she could jump into the arms of Dougie the ex."

He pounded the bag and did his damnedest to not imagine Doug's face on the canvas. He pretty much failed spectacularly, but better to visualize here alone than traumatize three people by losing his cool at Reilly's. He'd also save Cameron the trouble of posting bail by taking frustration out on an inanimate object and focusing the blame inward. He had no one to blame but himself.

Thirty minutes later, sweat dripping off his arms and torso, he finally tossed the gloves aside and walked the perimeter of the barn to cool off a little. He still couldn't get the image of Reilly and her ex out of his mind, but the red haze of anger no longer colored the picture. Heaving a sigh, he grabbed his shirt and headed for the office. A long, hot shower before he went home sounded great at the moment.

Entering the office, he turned on the desk light and nothing else. "Don't need to advertise I'm here late." Normally, he wouldn't care but he didn't want to deal with anyone right now.

He shed his clothes outside the stall and turned the water on. When it warmed, he stepped under the spray and rested his head on the wall. The water would run cold well before his mind went numb, but he'd manage.

"And remember why what-if can get me into trouble."

Caden is not a happy camper and he'll make sure Reilly knows it very soon. But … all is not what it seems, which is always a fun vibe to play with.

That's it for this week. Happy reading!

Sunday Snippet: Your Move

I'm so excited! We're getting our leaky roof replaced in the very near future. I've been waiting to do a small renovation in our bathroom because I need to make sure we won't have any more water damage in there. Can't wait!!

Not a bad week for television. Caught an episode of Frankie Drake Mysteries and, once again, enjoyed the four main characters and their bonding. Terrific female representation in this show.

Watched the penultimate episode of Riverdale's third season. So many revelations in this one and nothing I'm terribly surprised by. Edgar is just as creeptastic as I suspected. I do want to know if Polly is aware of Jason being… whatever the hell Jason is. My gut says Alice is not. Can't wait to find out. Veronica pulled a savage move on Hiram and I'm totally there for more of that. I literally hate that guy and actually wouldn't mind if he died in a fire. No such luck, I'm sure.

I caved and watched a season twelve episode of Peak Practice. I'll probably go back and forth on this show, catching the entire run while also sneaking in episodes with my favorite actor.

Caught the behind-the-scenes episode of Midsomer Murders and I'm ready to start season twenty-one. Looking forward to diving in next week.

I'm excited to watch the final season of Arrow in the very near future, along with the crossover event. I'm also thrilled to have some new super-hero shows on the horizon. Should be an interesting year for watching.

That's pretty much it for television this week. Tonight's post is from Your Move, a novella that got a start with a writing community prompt.

Here's the mini-blurb:

Reilly Mounts returns to her hometown after an impulsive marriage and a divorce that's turning ugly. Caden Bromley, her high school flame, wants to pick up where they left off, but Reilly needs some time to figure out where he fits in her life… and she has to deal with her soon-to-be ex.

And a snippety peek…

With his world tilting sideways, Caden waited until he could settle in his office, close the door, and focus on making a call to his brother. That meant checking through a large shipment of pretreated lumber and helping unload a tractor trailer full of hardware supplies.
He finally finished up around six, which worked well because of the time difference of his brother's location.
Cameron answered on the fifth ring. "Yo, Cade, I'm on vacation, remember?" Cameron moved somewhere with less noise. "What's up? You're interrupting a bona fide luau here."
Caden's lips quirked. "Sorry, bro. You'll have to send pictures after we're done." A kick of guilt hit his gut.
Hawaii had long been on Cameron's bucket list. Caden didn't waste time and got straight to the point. His brother would advise whether Caden wanted it or not.
"Reilly Mounts is back. For good, apparently. She's looking for a lawyer to handle her divorce." He paused a moment. "Asked if you can do the divorce thing and help her with setting up a corporation." There… all out in one go.
Cameron didn't respond. In fact, he stayed silent so long Caden wondered if the call dropped.
He had no desire to repeat spewing all the information again. "Cam? You there?"
Cameron finally replied, "Yeah, yeah. Trying to process that information overload you dumped on me." He shuffled around, probably grabbing for something to write with. "Where the hell do I start here? First, I wondered when she didn't contact me about selling the house if she'd be coming back. Sorry I didn't say anything about that."
Caden rolled his eyes. "Always the protective older brother. I can handle my shit now, Cam. You know that." He'd come a long way from the brokenhearted summer after senior year.
Cameron tsked. "Never said you couldn't. Didn't see a need to stir a shit pot unless necessary. The divorce I can take a look at. If she's got anything tricky, I'll refer her to Barnum Hentwhistle. I don't do the messy stuff. As for setting up a corporation, it depends on what she's looking for, but that's definitely my wheelhouse. For now, let her know we'll work something out. I take it she's looking for the family friend discount?"
How does he know?
Caden confirmed the guess. "You know more about what Wanda left her than I do, but Reilly did mention she doesn't have a lot to spend." Maybe the husband wanted a piece of Wanda's estate.
The idea irritated Caden more than he'd ever admit to anyone, including Cam.
Cameron grunted. "We'll figure that out too. I'll call her when I'm getting ready to fly out and work her into my schedule."
Caden nodded. "Sounds good. Thanks." He opened his mouth to sign off but Cameron cut in.
"Be careful, Cade. I'm not trying to be a dick when I say that. You're gonna do whatever you're gonna do and I'd be hard-pressed to ignore the girl of my dreams if she came back home, but you're not the same man and she's not the same woman. That's all I'm saying."
Caden appreciated the words of caution. "Thanks, bro. I'll be fine. Not like I'm looking for a hookup right now anyway. And that's all it would probably be."
Cameron snorted. "Yeah, and remember the reason. You stopped doing hookups a year ago because you said you wanted a long-term relationship. I'm just—"
"Looking out for me. Yeah, I know. Reilly isn't going to be that. She's still married for one thing and I doubt she'll want to dive back into a serious thing before the ink's even dry on her former marriage." When it became so.
Cameron added one last salvo. "Right… but the power of what-if is strong, my brother. Keep that in mind." The sound of drums got loud again. "I'm headed back to enjoy this luau. I'll call you before I head out."
The call ended and Caden shook his head. "Thanks, bro. I kind of needed Reilly's number." Oh well, he could stop by Wanda's house on his way home.
The power of what-if is strong.
His brother's words echoed all the way to Caden's truck.

I'm having a lot of fun with this one. I love the sibling relationship and second chance romances are fun to explore.

That's it for this week. Happy reading!

Sunday Snippet: Your Move

Yeesh, July has been a rough month. I'm kind of glad to see the tail end of it. Of course, mid-August starts the school year and it's crazypants from then until after the first of the year. LOL

I'm almost caught up on Dark Matter, which remains pretty decent. I do love the character interactions in this show. I'm slightly put off by all the new introductions, but I'll get over it.

Still need to catch up on Killjoys and Wynonna Earp. I really, really hate being made to wait for the episode for a full week. Seriously? The stupidest thing ever to not have the episode available immediately for people who can't watch or have another commitment and are unable to view when it's on. I'll never understand why network executives get paid the salaries they do when they're making decisions that shoot themselves in the foot. <shrugs>

Final episodes of Teen Wolf start tonight and I'm looking forward to seeing how this series ends. Very excited for the returning faces.

Less than a month away from The Last Ship. Again, impatiently waiting for one of my favorite shows to return. Come on August 20!

That's pretty much it for television this week. Tonight's post is from Your Move, a novella that started with the two-word prompt 'you win'.

Reilly Mounts drove into Haven's Mill, hometown USA, and faced down a lot of memories. "Gram, I hope this is what you wanted." Reilly didn't take the time to stop at the cemetery to visit her grandmother's grave… she'd have plenty of time later.
Because she'd come back to Haven's Mill to stay. For better or for worse.
Cruising through the mid-sized town, she relived most of her childhood and teenage years. Some new trendy shops mixed with the old standards on Main Street. The Pike Café got a facelift, something she'd missed on her trip to lay her grandma to rest six months ago.
Her lips curved. "Wonder how Gram felt about the new sign for Toodle-Doo's." The antique store now sported a neon sign, which clashed with the shop's vintage fare. "Maybe they're going more retro instead of pastime." Wanda Mounts would've pitched a fit… change never came easy for her.
Reilly frowned. "God knows I threw a lot at her." College, an impulse wedding, staying away for six years—time she'd never get back with her grandmother.
Reilly made the turn onto Mill Road and headed toward her destination. She didn't know what kind of reception she'd receive but she had to try… to get her life back on track, to make amends, to settle down. She owed nothing less to her gram's memory.
Pulling into the parking lot of Bromley's Lumber and Hardware, she cut the engine. Taking a deep breath, she got out of her vehicle but paused. Nervous tension filled her. Seeing Caden Bromley again shouldn't be such a big deal. But what the hell did she say to the guy she walked away from?
She shook her head and ran through several ways to greet him. Everything from apologies to cheesy pick-up lines tumbled through her brain. Nothing fit or seemed right.
She huffed out a breath. "I wonder how he'd respond if I just said, 'Hi, Caden, it's been a long time." Super easy but… too simple?
"He'd probably say something like, 'Reilly, I'm sorry for your loss. What brings you to Haven's Mill?'"
Reilly gasped and whirled around. The sight of him knocked her back. He'd filled out, no doubt from working full-time at the lumber yard. He'd also added about two more inches to height, putting him right about the six foot mark. Her observations put chinks in her already battered armor. He looked so terrific… but also very guarded. Not that she blamed him.
Caden glanced beyond her shoulder, his gaze scanning the interior of her car.
She caught on quickly. "I'm alone. Actually, that's why I'm here." She hated the way he shuttered his gaze, narrowing his eyes. "Does your brother still practice law? I need an attorney." Step one in taking her life back.
Caden tilted his head to one side. "Considering he handled your grandmother's estate, I'm pretty sure you know he's practicing law." His eyebrow quirked upward.
Reilly flushed, heat filling her face. "Well, yes, that's true. But this isn't about Gram's will. It about my marriage." She quickly clarified. "Specifically about ending it." Gah! Could she sound more like an idiot?
Caden blinked. "You're getting divorced?" He shook his head, clearly unsure what else to say.
She nodded. "I'm filing, yes. I'm back to stay and Doug's not coming." He'd never fit in Haven's Mill anyway. "With what Gram left me, I'm starting over and closing the chapter on my younger days. It's time to be a grown up." God, why did she share that? "Anyway, I can't afford to pay much, but I trust Cameron. The problem is—"
Caden filled in the rest. "He's on vacation. Left yesterday." A lopsided smile snuck across his face.
Reilly gave a little chuckle. "Yeah. I found that out when I called to make an appointment from my hotel last night." She glanced up, then back down. "I was hoping you could contact him—just to see if he can handle the divorce and help me file the paperwork to form a corporation—"
Caden's mouth dropped open. "You're starting a business?" Again, he shook his head, probably trying to sort through her muddled ramblings.
Reilly groaned. "Yes. God, I'm making a mess of this, aren't I?" She pushed onward, hoping he'd be willing to help… for old time's sake. "Look, I know this is stupid and a lot to ask, but I only need to know if he can help me or recommend someone who can." She stopped abruptly before she said anything else that could be considered lame or idiotic.
Caden studied her for several long moments before responding. "I'll give Cameron a call and get back with you about what he says."
Reilly heaved a sigh of relief. "Thank you. Truly." She turned to open her car door. "I'm staying at Gram's… well, I guess it's my new place." She slid behind the wheel and started the engine, eager to leave and not make more of a fool of herself. "I appreciate your help, Caden. Thank you, so much." She shut the door, put the car in gear, and back away, leaving Caden behind.
Again.
But this time she'd only be traveling to the other side of town… not running away to see the big, wide world.
She'd been there… and discovered how much the place sucked. Her heart belonged in Haven's Mill… her home…
And maybe she'd find her way back to her true self.
She hoped.

Reilly has some serious soul searching to do and Caden has to have patience or risk ruining something before it starts.

That's it for this week. Happy reading.

Sunday Snippet: Your Move

October 20, 2013

Hello!

So… one of the things I love about The Walking Dead is how much it blows my mind and creeps me out in equal measure. LOL Seriously, the show has so many little nuances that always suck me in, and yet it tops itself weekly by grossing me out to the point of wanting to heave. :D

Let's see, what else? Strike Back season finale did NOT disappoint. I have one or two teeny quibbles, but I had a huge grin on my face with the final scene, so yeah, direct score for season three (or, well, four, if you count the way I do and consider the first series with Armitage and Lincoln as number one). I honestly hope there's another season to watch and enjoy.

Arrow also ranks right up there on my obsession list. I want to talk and write meta posts about how much I love it. I haven't been so obsessed with a show since the reboot of Battlestar Galactica. Sons of Anarchy comes close, but I sort of avoid the fandom circles for the show.

Anyway, tonight's post is from Your Move, a novella about returning home and finding what the character is made of. :D

Here's the tagline:

Reilly Mounts returns to her hometown after an impulsive marriage and a divorce that's turning ugly. Caden Bromley, her high school flame, wants to pick up where they left off, but Reilly needs some time to figure out where he fits in her life… and she has to deal with her soon to be ex.

And a snippety peek…

Reilly entered Caden's office. "When did you deliver the flooring for the bathroom?"
Caden glanced up from his paperwork. "Around eight." He went back to writing numbers on the page.
Reilly flicked her tongue over her lower lip. Eight pm. Shit. Marco would've been in the middle of his seduction routine. Had Caden…
Only one way to find out. "Why didn't you knock? I was home."
Caden snorted. "I'll say. And occupied" He tossed the pencil on his desk. "What's going on, Reilly? I thought you were getting divorced."
She answered. "I am."
Caden lifted a brow. "Really? You sure about that? You were pretty hot and heavy with the guy."
She put her hands on the desk and leaned in. "So what? You don't own me, Caden. You have no right to spy on me."
Caden slowly nodded. "You know what, you're right." He got up and grabbed his jacket from the back of his chair. "You win. I'm done." Caden walked past her to the door.
Dammit. She didn't want to fight with him. She wanted to curl up next to him and unload about the last two days.
"Caden."
His paused, his fingers on the knob.
"Wait."
He dropped his hand to his side. But he wouldn't turn around. Reilly got the message.
The next move would have to be hers.
Reilly's stuck between a rock and hard place, and she really wants the hard place. :D

That's it for this week. Happy reading!
