Sunday Snippet: On the Bench

December 30, 2018

I hope everyone who celebrates had a terrific holiday. Mine ended up being lovely; very low-key and quiet with family. The days after have been filled with catching up with friends. I got to spend time with my two best friends from high school last night and we had the best time. So nice to catch up after such a long time.

It's been a slow week for television. My focus is off right now and background noise gets distracting sometimes. I did catch some Classic Who while catching up on the dishes and doing some cooking. I'm into the web planet episodes right now.

Started the Thanksgiving episode of The Flash. Really hope to get caught up on my CW shows soon. Watched Midsomer Murders's final episode of series thirteen. Nice to see how Barnaby the first retired.

I also caught another episode of Babylon 5. I'd forgotten about this one and it was nice to see Dr. Franklin fight a moral dilemma. Also watched an episode of The Sarah Conner Chronicles. As a standalone episode, it worked well.

And that's pretty much it for my light week of viewing. Tonight's post is from On the Bench, a novella that started with a group discussion about weird situations characters find themselves in.

Here's the mini-blurb:

Peyton Bice comes of age around the mixed marital arts sporting events and her past comes calling in the form of her father's former star fighter, now a leading trainer. Rookie Cliff Westfordson offers a shoulder to lean on, but Peyton fears getting tangled up with the newest recruit on her dad's roster.

And a snippety peek…

Peyton Bice closed her eyes and exhaled slowly. You'll be sorry, Peyton. Roman Capp will chew you up and spit you out. Her father's words echoed in her mind now at the sight greeting her.
Her boyfriend, the man she'd put all her faith in, currently had two up and coming mixed martial arts female fighters in bed with him. One, a brunette, on her knees with Roman's dick buried deep and the other, a blonde, flat on her back with Roman's hand between her legs.
I should have listened to you, Dad.
Peyton dropped her duffel bag on the floor with a loud thud. "Guess the honeymoon's over." Barely six months into her official relationship with the raging dickhole.
Roman craned his head around and motioned her to join the group on the bed. "Come on, baby." He pulled out of the brunette. "I got plenty of dick to go around." He fisted his cock, giving it a good tug.
She snorted and swallowed down the bile rising in her throat. "I don't think so, Roman. The size of your dick doesn't mean fuck all right now." She clenched her teeth together and snarled. "Where you're putting it does." The weight of her terrible choice settled between her shoulders and she resisted the urge to start tearing all three occupants apart.
A moment of clarity. The past year had been leading up to this very moment. She'd made the worst decision ever, all because she'd believed and trusted Roman.
He narrowed his eyes then glanced at the two new recruits. "Entertain yourselves for a moment. Gotta straighten this out with the little lady." He got up, his hard dick bobbing up and down, and walked toward Peyton.
The blonde and brunette moved to the middle of the bed and became a tangle of lips, hands, and scissored legs.
Roman grabbed her arm in a loose grip. "Peyton, babe, you know you're mine. Fucking these two doesn't change that." He slid his gaze sideways, licking his lips at the sight of the two women tribbing. "God damn, they're hot." He shifted his attention back to Peyton. "Gotta break in the new talent. You know that better than anyone. Busted your cherry, didn't I?"
More like he'd taken what she freely offered, much to her dad's dismay. She'd been six months shy of her eighteenth birthday when she'd been dazzled by Roman's seduction. And she'd been eighteen for two days when her dad cut Roman from his roster and Peyton walked out to follow the man she loved.
Peyton's lips twisted in a grimace. "Yeah, you did." So stupid. She couldn't be any dumber if a load of bricks landed on her head. "Thanks for that." She needed at least a hundred miles between her and Roman ASAP or one of them would end up in the hospital. "And have fun fucking the new girls. I'm sure they'll be big names on the marquee soon." She pulled away from him, repulsed by his touch, and bent to get her duffel bag.
Roman followed her from the bedroom. "Don't even think about leaving, you stupid bitch. I own your ass. You won't find anyone who gives it to you the way I do." He stopped in the middle of the living room.
Her hand on the doorknob, she paused a moment. Right. Because her nonexistent experience before Roman gave her nothing to base a comparison on. And exactly what had he given her? An STD test would definitely tell her. Shouldering her bag, she opened the door and left the apartment, and the building. She hated to crawl back to The Barn, but Beau wouldn't turn her away. Blood meant something to him.
And she had a new appreciation for what flowed through her veins.

This scene took a direction I didn't expect and it wouldn't be reined in. Peyton needed the bite of harsh reality and Roman definitely delivered.

That's it for this week. Happy reading!

Sunday Snippet: Oceanfront Villa

Happy early holidays. I hope everyone has a wonderful season full of love, laughter, and fun. If not, I hope the trauma is limited and as painless as possible.

The past week flew by with a lot of crazy running around. I did manage to get a ton of work cleared and got in some television viewing while doing so. Caught another episode of The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency. Seriously, I love this show so much. I think I'm about halfway through the season. Also caught another episode of Strike Back and, damn, the CO pulled a twisty move I didn't anticipate. Gotta say, I'm kind of pissed and sincerely hope she gets what's coming to her. Can't wait to watch the next episode and see some familiar faces.

Caught an episode of Chicago Fire and thoroughly enjoyed. I like Christopher as the new lieutenant and it was so nice to have the weasel-like commissioner dude not around. I'm not down with that plot point at all. Caught episode nine of Luke Cage and loved the little twists. Glad to see Bushwhacker get his ass handed to him for once.

Watched Mr. 365, a Passionflix original holiday movie. I liked it a lot. Looking forward to the holiday quickie, which I might not get to until after the actual holiday. LOL

Murdoch Mysteries's sixth episode will need a rewatch. I'm not actually sure what the hell happened. LOL

I'm finished with the first season of Penny Dreadful. The last episode ended up having quite a few surprises. Good ones. I'm ready for season two. Also caught an episode of Wynonna Earp. This show never fails to throw in a crazy twist and get really messy. I like that.

Watched episode twelve of The Dresden Files and remembered this one from my original viewing. I liked having Murphy's dad in the mix. Also started episode two of Underbelly: Razor. I'll try to finish it up soon.

Watched another episode of Classic Who and finally finished the fifth episode of Doctor Who. It ended up being better than expected.

And that's pretty much it for television this week. Between work and getting the final shopping stuff done, I ran out of steam.

Tonight's post is from Oceanfront Villa, a novella that started with a writing community prompt of "vacationing together". I decided to make it a reconnect-type of vacation.

Here's the mini-blurb:

Danielle Finch is a hardworking doctor who rarely takes time off and her relationship with Vince Darkholme, an in-demand attorney, suffers for the lack of face time. When Vince's client offers the use of his oceanfront villa, Danielle readily agrees to take two weeks to rekindle the passion she sorely misses with Vince.

And a snippety peek…

Danielle heaved a sigh and picked up her handset. "Gigi, do I have any more patients today?" Her tablet indicated she'd finished with the last one.
Since Monica Rense's visit, she'd had a full week of nonstop craziness. Missing Sunday brunch at Risa's sent her spiraling into stress mode. She'd wanted to spend the time with Vince.
Gigi only took a moment to respond. "No, Doctor Finch. We're done with visits. Just have the labs to send out and I can handle those after you sign off." She sent the orders to Danielle's tablet.
She clicked the first file to open it. "I've got them. Thanks." She paused a moment, making a quick decision. "Gigi, start going light on the schedule and be ready to juggle a few appointments. I'm going to see if Doctor Morales can cover for me for a few weeks." If nothing else, some downtime would let her recharge a little and maybe have dinner with her husband a few nights.
Gigi's used a concerned tone. "Is everything all right, Doctor Finch?"
Danielle's lips curved. "Honestly? I'm running close to burning out. I haven't taken a vacation in almost two years. I think it's time to disconnect and regroup. Maybe look at bringing a partner on now that the practice is established." Someone to share the ups and downs with.
Gigi got excited. "Yes! It's about time if you don't mind me saying so." Her fingers clicked on her keyboard. "I'll get to work on the schedule and you should remind Doctor Morales that not only did you cover for her when her daughter went into labor, you also took her patient load over the holidays last year."
Danielle had forgotten about that. "Huh, you're right. I'm pretty sure Dana won't mind then." If she did, well, Danielle could always find someone else.
A make a note to not cover for Doctor Morales anymore.
Danielle started on the lab orders. "I'll get through these files and then I'm logging out for the day and heading home." Early enough to stop by Vince's office to see if he wanted to get dinner.
Gigi hung up and Danielle quickly worked through the files. She logged out of the system and gathered her purse and attaché. Heading down to the parking garage, she sent a quick text to Vince. "Leaving work. Do you want to meet for dinner?"
Vince responded. "Hey, Dani. I'm just headed out to Leonard's Bistro with Dave Canneli. We've got a six o'clock reservation. Should be home before nine."
Dave Canneli. One of Vince's top clients. Meaning she couldn't invite herself along.
Danielle typed out a quick reply. "Okay, I'll stop and get some takeout. Love you." She bit back disappointment.
Vince shot a quick response. "Love you, too."
She vaguely remembered Vince mentioning he had a working dinner. She hadn't realized he meant tonight. Sliding behind the wheel of her vehicle, she started the engine and pulled out of the lot.
Looks like it's soup and salad from The Market Basket and a long, leisurely soak in the tub for me.
At least Vince wouldn't be late. She'd have a chance to talk about their day and let him know about the time off she planned.

I'm kind of excited about this story. I'm not completely sure where it's going and I love the process of discovery along the way.

That's it for this week. Happy reading!

Sunday Snippet: No Words

Well… I appear to be almost over the cold from hell. The scratchy throat from last week lasted about three days and then it all went to my chest. Those mucus busting tablets work wonders for clearing out the crud and getting lots of sleep helped a ton. I think I'm on the road to recovery, so yay!

I'm still behind on my regular viewing shows but I did catch the episode "The Icicle Cometh" on The Flash. Actually quite enjoyed that one.

Caught another episode of The Sarah Conner Chronicles. My Crackle app started misbehaving and I finally got it back to usable form. I'm about halfway through the second season now.

I have one episode left of series thirteen of Midsomer Murders. Looking forward to starting the next one. Also caught episode nine of Babylon 5. I'd forgotten how truly remarkable the first season of B5 ended up being.

Watched another episode of Birds of Prey. I think I have five left. That show was a little ahead of its time. If they shot it now, it would probably be well-received. Also started a rewatch of Roswell. If the new reboot gets picked up, I want to have the memory of the original in my mind. Not sure they'll be able to pull off a decent new show.

Caught episodes of Pensacola Wings of Gold and Lexx. I've discovered I'm not as fond of Lexx on my rewatch. The episodes are very hit and miss.

Caught a few more episodes of Classic Who and started the fifth episode of Doctor Who's new season.

That's pretty much it for television this week. Tonight's post is from No Words, a sexy short that started with a writing community prompt of describing a moment of quiet. My description turned into a short story where the characters don't need a lot of conversation.

Here's the mini-blurb:

Colby Mass and Webster Bishop are soldiers in an elite unit and usually go full tilt into action. But when they find unexpected down time, they discover solitude can be craved, sought, and given, sometimes in unanticipated ways.

And a snippety peek…

A moment of quiet always made Colby nervous. Not that she couldn't appreciate it when things calmed down… but those random stretches of silence always reminded her of death or dying. When people she cared about no longer lived or couldn't fight anymore.
Right now, the quiet made her eyes burn and her throat close. She couldn't speak if she wanted to. A comrade fell today and the harsh reality of being in a stupid warzone dragged her under its wheels.
Sitting outside the base morgue, she had time to think, which didn't always turn out well. Sometimes she remembered things better left alone, like close calls averted and good times that would no longer include a member of their unit.
Other times, she got a wild hair idea and couldn't resist the impulse to see where it went. Her current crazy plan involved a hot body, a hard dick, and mindless sex to chase away the numbness of grief.
Rising, still in full kit, she'd grab the first guy she ran into and make her desire known. Rounding the corner, she collided with Webster, also still dressed in his tactical gear. As far as partners went, he'd do nicely.
His hands gripped her forearms. "Sorry." He met her gaze. "Showers are clear. If you want…" Still holding her gaze captive, his voice trailed off.
He wanted the same thing. With her. How did I get so lucky?
She gave a nod. "I do. You?" Had to be sure even if she'd bet her next pay grade he had the same idea she did.
He jerked his head toward the exit. "Let's go."
Their boots clomped on the tiled floor then became muffled thuds when they crossed the hard-packed sand to get to the barracks. She preceded him into the head and sure enough, not a soul lingered in the steamy confines.
Turning , she gave him a chance to back out. "You sure?" She unclipped her vest, letting it fall to the floor.
He repeated her action, yanking the fastenings one by one. "I'm sure." Reaching behind his head, he dragged his t-shirt off.
She did the same, tossing it on her vest. Starting on her pants, she pushed them past her hips and stepped out when they pooled at her feet. Her bra came next and when she got it up and over her head, Webster stood facing her in his military issue boxer briefs.
By unspoken agreement, they shed their underwear in unison. She took a moment, letting her gaze do a once-over. Hot body. Hard dick. Check.
She needed this.
It.
Him.
The thought hit and settled deep in her brain. She didn't want anyone else. When had that happened? Didn't matter. She'd pictured him earlier and the reality turned out better than her imagination.
Webster ducked into a stall and turned the water on. He held out a hand, his gaze dark and smoldering.
She grasped his fingers and he tugged her forward, sharing the shower's spray. The water already hot, she expected a steamy beginning. Instead, Webster traced her cheekbones with his thumbs, grazing lightly over an abrasion she received from a piece of concrete.
Oh, man.
The tenderness and care he used sent a surge of emotion coursing through her. Her lip trembled and he caught her mouth in a gentle kiss. Her hands grasped his biceps and a sob bubbled up in her throat.
He broke the embrace and rested his forehead against hers. The sting of the water pelting them reminded her they were alive. The numbness of loss faded and a yearning for life bloomed.
Blindly reaching for the soap and a washcloth, she lathered up the fabric. "May I?" When he nodded, she started with his shoulders and washed his entire torso.
He took the cloth and mimicked her actions. When his hands dipped below her waist, she slid her palms around to cup his ass then dragged them forward to fist his erection. The slippery suds aided her and, by the time they rinsed off, his cock throbbed between her fingers.
Webster grasped her shoulder with one hand and trailed the other between her legs to find her slick and ready. "Won't be slow." His voice rasped, indicating his need.
Colby turned and put her palms on the tiled partition, then glanced back in his direction. "Don't want slow." She spread her legs and arched her back.
Webster grunted his approval, palmed her hips, and slid his cock through her slippery folds. He leaned forward, his lips sucking at the column of her throat at the same moment his dick plunged deep.
Colby hissed out a satisfied breath then moaned when he pulled back and thrust forward again. Webster's mouth worked across her shoulders, his hands holding her hips steady while he flexed his thighs with each charge and retreat. Her head dropped forward and goose bumps rose on her skin despite the steamy heat in the stall. Tingling awareness coursed through her, a reminder she still lived and breathed and needed to seize life with both hands.
And she couldn't imagine anyone better to share the ride with than Webster.

I'm pretty pleased with how this one is coming together. Hopefully, I'll get it finished up and submitted for publishing in the near future.

That's it for this week. Happy reading!

Sunday Snippet: A Nice Gesture

December 9, 2018

Ugh. The saying when it rains it pours definitely applied to me this week. All three of our vehicles ended up needing something crucial and important RFN. Luckily, one of our local car dealers is a friend and he let us borrow a car. Yes, I said borrow. Saving the expense of renting a car helped a lot! Then… I ended up with a nasty cold. The kind where I literally couldn't be more than an arm's length away from a box of tissues because my nose wouldn't stop running, my eyes wouldn't stop watering, and I coughed and / or sneezed every few minutes. Thankfully, I’m at the stage where my voice is gone and my throat is a little scratchy, but otherwise, I'm tissue-free. Whew!

I'm so behind on my regular television shows. Arrow is probably my favorite and I'm at least two episodes behind. I'm hoping to catch up this weekend.

I did get to watch Penny Dreadful and I'm one episode away from the end of the first season. I kind of like the jagged direction this show takes sometimes.

Wynonna Earp continues to be a favorite. The "Undo It" episode ended up being way better than I expected. This show is so good.

Watched another episode of The Dresden Files and I think I'm close to being at the end of the one season we got. So much promise for this show.

Started a new season of Underbelly: Razor. 1920s Australia is a great setting.

And that's pretty much it for television this week. Between dealing with all the car drama and the cold symptoms, my brain took a vacation. LOL

Tonight's post is from A Nice Gesture, a sexy short that started with a writing community prompt and spun into a full story.

Here's the mini-blurb:

Marah Timm and Teague McCallister work at Humpberry Farms for their summer break. Marah is prickly and standoffish, but Teague recognizes the lonely soul in need of a nice gesture.

And a snippety peek…

Marah pretty much soaked one corner of Teague's shirt. She had no idea how they got to her sofa, but when Teague handed her a tissue, she accepted it with gratitude. Who knew a nice, simple gesture would open the floodgates?
She wiped her face. "I'm sorry. That's been a long time coming, I guess." Right, a lifetime.
Teague tucked her against his side. "I hope it helped. I take it it's been a while since anyone celebrated your birthday with you?"
What to tell him? Maybe the truth, the whole ugly, sad bit of it.
No, not tonight. Not on her birthday. Not when she had a hot guy in her cabin. Happy birthday to me.
She shrugged. "It's been a long time for a lot of things." Shifting her position, she angled around to straddle his lap.
His eyes widened in surprise then narrowed. "What's going on, Marah?"
She hummed low in her throat. "I'm thinking it's time to unwrap a really terrific present." Her mouth hit his with a hot kiss and, holy it's-been-too-long , the man could melt wax with his lips.
Teague responded, thrusting his tongue past her teeth and cupping her ass. She wanted more… everything… and why weren't they naked yet?
Breaking the kiss, she planned to rectify having too many clothes between them. She yanked her shirt up and off then swooped back in to continue the lip-lock.
Teague cut the embrace short, leaning back to hold her gaze. He didn't look angry but he didn't give off eager vibes either.
Mortified, Marah slid off his lap and fished around for her shirt. "Shit. You're not into this. I should've known." What a perfect endcap to a crappy week.
Teague snagged her hand. "Whoa. First, I'm definitely into this." He guided her palm to the hard ridge pushing against his cargo shorts. "But I'm not into taking advantage when you're in a… vulnerable place."
Her mouth dropped open. "Are you serious right now?" Did he think she didn't know her mind?
Did she, though? She didn't care. She wanted what she wanted.
Him.
Hard and naked. Preferably for the night.
He blew out a harsh breath. "Trust me. I rarely turn down an offer from a gorgeous woman." He shook his head.
She backed away. "Then why start now?" Maybe she should have given him the whole sad story of her effed up family woes.
He got up and came to stand behind her. "As much as I'd love to be your birthday treat, I meant what I said. I want to get to know you. As great as the sex would be… and it would be off the charts… it's not all I'm looking for here."
How am I supposed to respond to that? "What are you looking for?" Oddly, she almost feared his answer.
Because if he said he wanted a friend, she'd punch him. Really hard.
He tilted his head to one side and moved to face her. "Honestly… I'm not completely sure." His hand cupped her chin. "A beginning maybe?" His head straightened and he leaned in. "And more of this."
His lips caught hers and, oh, wow, a promise for so much more lingered when he finally eased away.
She grabbed his hand when he started for the door. "Teague… um, thank you." She met his gaze and held it. "Would you like to meet for lunch tomorrow?" She wanted the getting to know each thing too.
He flashed a smile. "Appleman's?" The farm's cute, retro diner.
She grinned. "Sounds terrific. One o'clock?" She'd be able to get a full pour of candles completed by then.
Teague gave a nod and exited her cabin. The space suddenly seemed dismal without him. Turning toward the small kitchen, she gathered the dishes and filled the sink.
Sticking her hands in the sudsy water, she smiled again. "I can't believe he made me dinner for my birthday." So not what she expected from a guy like Teague.
That would teach her to judge a man by appearance alone.
An epiphany washed over her. Son of a bitch. That's exactly what my family does. The ingrained and learned habit held her in thrall.
But no more. It's past time I truly start walking my own path. Way past.
Starting now, buoyed by Teague's nice gesture.

This story ended up going somewhere I didn't expect. I'm pretty happy with how Teague and Marah are navigating things.

That's it for this week. Happy reading!

Sunday Snippet: Next Year Same Time

Hello, December. Per usual, the weather in Ohio is crazy back and forth. Super cold for several days then sixty degrees then back to super cold again. And rain. Lots and lots of rain. Bleh.

It's been another busy workweek with a rush job for a holiday release and finishing up another manuscript. Throw in car trouble on Friday with not one but two vehicles and, yeah, lost the whole day. LOL

Television was a mixed bag of viewing pleasure. I finished out last week with Pensacola Wings of Gold watching a pretty interesting episode where one of the marines got set up by another government worker. Lexx's second season is at the wobbly part where one episode is great and the next is not so much. Also caught a Hallmark movie, An Old-Fashioned Thanksgiving, which has three of my favorite actresses. Should be following up with the Christmas movie this week if my schedule doesn't blow up again.

I have to take a moment and rave about The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency. This show always ends up making me smile, even when the storyline is somewhat sad. The fifth episode ended up making laugh out loud and I needed it this past week.

I followed up the funny with some serious emotional drama in Strike Back. Almost through season five, which should catch me up for season six. I gotta say this show does a great job at not letting the members of section twenty save the day in an easy fashion. Two steps forward and five steps back is things usually go for them.

Chicago Fire is kind of losing me with this whole deputy commissioner bullshit. Kind of like Chicago PD lost me with sticking someone in just to put a leash on Hank. I'll finish out this season but if there isn't a big change, I'll be skipping the next with the exception of crossover episodes. I love crossovers.

I'm almost finished with Luke Cage's second season. I'll be honest, I'm really disappointed there won't be more and supposedly it's because of the whole Disney + streaming service that's not even launched yet. I'm all for choice and options, but when services get overly proprietary, they sometimes shoot themselves in the foot. I hope that doesn't happen here.

Passionflix debuted another Quickie with Dry Spell and it was funny and sweet but not sugary. I enjoyed it.

I also caught Murdoch Mysteries and liked seeing Terence back again. Finished out the night with a Christmas Belle, a holiday spin on Beauty and the Beast.

Not a bad week of viewing. Tonight's post is from Next Year Same Time, a novella that started with a writing community prompt of writing a story with the characters marking a milestone in their lives. Another prompt suggested making the anniversary of a horrible or scary event.

Here's the mini-blurb:

Lita Vonn is a store owner who gets caught up in a bank robbery and makes a connection with the negotiator, Saber Reyes. Saber questions her desire to get together and offers an alternative suggestion—next year, same time, they'll meet at the coffee shop across the street.

And a snippety peek…

Lita Vonn poked her head into the main hub of her shop. "Norma, can you handle things here?" A huge online order needed to be filled and Lita had to make a trip to the bank across the street.
Norma Willis looked up from wrapping a pair of candlesticks. "Sure, boss. What's up?" She finished the set and moved on to a ceramic dish.
Lita held up the deposit bag. "I've got the auction proceeds here and we could use the green in our account." Once a quarter, she held a cash-only sale to the highest bidder to move product and make way for new items.
The success of the last one combined with the large online sale over the weekend had visions of a beach vacation dancing in Lita's head.
Norma flashed a smile and twisted her long mane up into a topknot on her head. "I'm down with getting this out the door, so I'll be out on the floor here." She motioned to the entrance. "Go on. Get that money deposited."
Lita squeezed Norma's shoulder. "The new color looks good on you." She referred to the almost electric shade of blue Norma now sported.
Norma laughed. "I like it better than the hot pink, which would probably look better on you, blondie."
Lita snorted. "Yeah, um, no. I'm not patient enough to sit through a long coloring session." She pushed the door open. "I'll be back ASAP to help get that order out."
Norma called out. "You're just too chicken shit to go for a bold new look." Her laughter followed Lita halfway across the street.
Hell, yes, I am. When it came to hair color, Lita played with highlights and lowlights sometimes, but always kept her original shade. But… maybe a pink streak or two could add some pizzazz to her look.
She entered the bank and stopped short, sucking in a startled breath. What the hell? Why are the employees crouched on the floor? Fuck! A robbery? Damn, damn, damn.
Before she could get turned around to go back the way she came, a tall, skinny man gave her a sneering smile. "Welcome to the shit show, blondie. You'll do." He motioned her forward with a semiautomatic rifle.
I'll do? For what? Damn, damn, damn.
Lita moved to the spot he indicated and stood there, the deposit bag tucked under her arm. She focused on staying calm and not giving in to the shaky fear trying to hold her in its grip. Her dad always said fear proved a tricky thing. It could get a person killed or keep them alive. Please let it keep me alive. Please, please, please.
Skinny man let his jacket fall open, revealing a vest rigged with explosives. "Name's Chuck Barnaby. You're gonna wanna remember that when the big, bad negotiator calls." He swung wildly toward the cowering employees. "Not usin' these fucking bank drones to do my talking, so looks like you're it." He moved past her to lock the doors then came back and thumped his fist on the receptionist's desk. "Park your ass right here and wait for the call."
Lita followed the instructions, making her way to the desk, placing the deposit bag on the floor beside the chair. She had no idea how her legs managed to move, but she sank down in the oversized seat and pushed out a shaky breath. Placing both palms on the wooden surface, she almost laughed at how sweaty they were. I'll probably ruin the polish. Seriously, her brain picked that to focus on?
Barnaby propped a hip on the edge of the desk and trained the rifle in the direction of the employees before leaning in closer to Lita. "Comfy, darlin'?"
Lita quirked a brow. "Does it matter?" Stupid to push her luck, but she wouldn't let her fright control her.
Chuck laughed. "Not one bit. All you need to do is get ready to answer the phone."
Lita nodded. What else could she do? Except say a prayer to the universe that Chuck Barnaby didn't open fire… or blow himself and everyone in the bank up.

I'm enjoying these characters. Lita is fun to write and her introduction to Saber over the phone will be the next scene. Can't wait to finish it.

That's it for this week. Happy reading!

Sunday Snippet: New Year's Nip

I hope everyone who observes Thanksgiving had a terrific one. The fam and I went to my dad's for a very low-key dinner and quality time together. It's been a few years since we've been able to do that, which is weird because he only lives two miles away from me. LOL

I can honestly say this year I'm so thankful that my family and work life is on an even keel and I some majorly great ideas popping for both my writing and a business venture I hope to pursue in the new year. My editing work keeps me busy and I get to read new books all the time. For a book nerd, there's nothing better.

Television took a back seat to some work commitments and the holiday. I caught a bunch of Classic Who episodes. I'm in season two during the Rome arc. Thoroughly enjoy watching the first doctor.

I’m almost finished with season one of Penny Dreadful. There are times when the show seems to plod along a little. I hope that smooths out with the next season.

Legends of Tomorrow had a great Thanksgiving episode. I kind of like Nate being with the time bureau. Of course a huge showdown with his dad is inevitable. Sadly. I also kind of love Ray getting a little tarnished and being so uncertain about some of his decisions. Makes him a lot more interesting.

Wow. Wynonna Earp keeps getting better. They never quite do what I expect them to do and I love it. Messy relationships playing out on screen is highly entertaining.

Got in another episode of The Dresden Files and I remember watching this one. I hope the new incarnation stays with some of the interesting details of how Harry became a wizard. Also got the last episode of Underbelly's first season. Gotta say it started out pretty slow but ended up being pretty decent.

I watched Midsomer Murders while getting caught up on folding laundry. The entire episode… so yeah, I had a crap ton of clean clothes to fold. Also got an episode of Babylon 5 in on the same day.

To round out the week, I caught episode seven of Birds of Prey on CW Seed and then followed up with The Flash's All Doll'd Up. While I like Nora, she can be a little whiny sometimes. Hope that changes soon.

And that's it for television this week. Tonight's post is from New Year's Nip, an Organic Nature sexy short.

Here's the mini-blurb:

Eppie Collins has a terrific guy, one who gave her a wonderful Christmas holiday. She's returning the favor on New Year's Eve, making surprise last minute plans to watch the midnight fireworks in the city. Vin's not the only one who can pull out all the stops.

And a snippety peek…

Cozy in her bed, Eppie stretched and almost purred like a cat. Her final numbers for the year, after she added the Christmas sales in, far surpassed her expectations. She'd been so pleased she dragged Vin to bed at seven o'clock and didn't let him sleep until after midnight.
A niggle of guilt fluttered in her consciousness. He scheduled his year-end meeting with his employees this morning and had to get up at the ass crack of ugly o'clock to go back to his place and pull all his notes together then stop and pick up the annual bonuses he gave the workers, which usually doubled their standard weekly pay and made up for having the week between Christmas and New Year's off.
And he got a late start because she'd been in the mood for wake-up sex.
Amazing what a couple days away and kick ass profit did for her libido.
She sat up and swung her legs over the edge of the mattress. Planning something hot and sexy for New Year's would be a great way to repay Vin's generosity and general awesomeness for putting up with her stressed-out insanity. If he could plan and execute an amazing surprise, she should be able to pull off the same.
And she had just the idea to blow his mind.
After grabbing a quick shower, Eppie dressed and went downstairs. She poured a mug of coffee and checked her phone for messages. Finding none, she scrolled through her contacts and found the person she wanted. Swiping her finger over the send button, she waited for a response.
"You've reached the Chamberlain. This is Maj. How can I help you have a fantastic day?" The renovated hotel on the city's waterfront had become a popular destination on the final day of December and Maj took pride in making every visitor feel special.
Eppie's lips curved. She'd roomed with Maj Domer their freshman year of college and they'd remained friends over the years. When spring arrived, Eppie couldn't wait to have Maj over for a weekend of girl talk and catching up in her new haven—the shed Vin built for her.
Eppie jumped right in. "By finding me one last room for the New Year's Eve celebration." She waited a moment. "Please, please, please." The city always put on a gorgeous fireworks display over the water to welcome in the New Year.
Maj gave a happy shriek. "Eppie? Oh, my God, how are you?" She spoke to someone else on her end. "Cover the front desk. I'm taking five." A moment or two passed then Maj spoke again. "Sorry, wanted a distraction-free environment. What's going on? How was your holiday?" Maj never failed to throw a million questions out before Eppie had a chance to answer the first one.
But she'd had lots of practice with Maj's chaotic style. "I'm terrific. Had the best year to date for Organic Nature. And my excellent holiday was spent in a secluded B&B."
Maj lowered her voice. "Is that hot man of yours still rocking your world?"
Eppie laughed. "Absolutely. That's why I'm hoping you can work some magic and find a room for me." She didn't care what kind as long as it had a bed and bathroom.
Maj hesitated a moment. "Welllll, I might happen to have just the thing." Her fingers tapped on a keyboard. "But… I have to swear you to secrecy. Okay?"
Eppie didn't think twice. "Done. My lips are zipped." Excitement thrummed through her veins.
Maj lowered her voice again. "We have a suite reserved all year round for one client. He pays in advance and we keep the suite ready for him at all times." She paused, no doubt on purpose to draw out the suspense. "That said, due to something of a personal relationship with him, I happen to have permission to use the suite when he's not going to be here." She stopped, letting the innuendo sink in. "He'll be out of the country until mid-January so the suite is yours if you want it."
Eppie fist-pumped the air. "Sold. How much?" She didn't care what figure Maj named, she'd happily pay whatever the price. "And we obviously need to do some major catching up on this new personal relationship." She hoped this guy worked out for Maj.
Maj laughed. "Since I owe you several times over, I'm going to comp your stay. Why run the hotel if I can't let one of my closest friends surprise her hot, sexy man?"
Eppie huffed out a breath. "Don't think I'm not aware you changed the subject. And thank you. I am trying to surprise Vin."
Maj clicked her tongue against her teeth. "I knew it. And I did jump topic, but only because I don't want to talk about him while I'm working or do it over the phone." Her tone grew wistful. "We need a girls' weekend. Soon."
Eppie agreed. "Let's make some time in the spring. I'll have a better idea of what's free after Valentine's Day."
Maj didn't argue. "Sounds good. Now here's how we're going to be all covert…"
Eppie listened to Maj provide details. They would bypass regular check-in and go directly to the suite. They could come and go as they pleased, but Maj directed her to use the VIP entrance and gave her the code to enter and exit, which Maj would change after their stay.
The VIP entrance. Eppie shook her head when she ended the call. Maj surpassed Eppie's wildest hope to secure any room, even if only a last minute cancellation. But an entire suite on the top floor?
Oh… she had some plans to make.

I had a major block on this story but it finally started coming together. Hopefully, I have the rest of this series ready to launch by next year.

That's it for this week. Happy reading!

Sunday Snippet: Muse It Up

Geez… what a week. I can honestly say I've never worked harder on a copy edit than I have for the past twelve days. I've actually never taken twelve days to complete a copy edit before. TLDR… it's a long manuscript and there were a crap ton of glitchy little things that needed review. My brain kind of hurts right now. LOL

To top the long work week off, my daughter had three nights of after-school events.  National honor society inductions on Tuesday, golf awards banquet on Thursday, and the holiday parade on Friday, which we made five gallons of hot chocolate for the choir kids to drink and keep warm while riding the float. Seriously… it's not as easy to make five gallons of a hot drink as one might think. And… my daughter's also in band so she doesn't even ride the float with the choir. She marches and misses all the chocolaty goodness.

Needless to say, I'm now behind on my television viewing. I actually couldn't watch the finale of The Last Ship. I'm not ready to say goodbye to this show yet. I'm going to miss that damn ship and its sailors so much.

I do have a brief rundown of what I did get to see. Caught another episode of Strike Back's fifth season. I'm starting to like this group a lot. I do miss the instant chemistry the previous cast had, especially the leads. That said, the dynamic is different enough with this group that I'm interested in where things go. And they're completely pared down, carrying on with how the previous incarnation ended. The commander is rebuilding and restoring the reputation of Section Twenty. So… they get lots of wiggle room.

Caught the Chicago crossover event with Fire, Med, and PD. Thoroughly enjoyed all three shows. I've lost some love for Chicago PD. The fifth season kind of lost me with all the sneaky snitchy bullshit. I really want to watch Chicago Med from the beginning. Here's hoping that happens in the near future.

I'm almost finished with Luke Cage. Disappointed there won't be a third season but maybe we'll see the character is something else. Who knows.

Got an episode of Murdoch Mysteries in. I like how this show weaves current topical events into the storyline, showing how often history tends to repeat. Not necessarily a great thing, but it's fun to see how they work it all out.

Watched a couple episodes of Classic Who. I'm behind on the new season but should get caught up soon. Started a new episode of Penny Dreadful and should finish the first season by the end of the month.

And that's it for television this week. Tonight's post is from Muse It Up, a novella that started with writing community prompt of "a writer meets a bartender at his favorite bar". What happens next?

Here's the mini-blurb:

Nate Shaunessey can't get in the groove to write his new supernatural series. When he meets the new bartender, Hunter Gant, at his local pub, a muse is born. The only problem? Nate's afraid to tell her she's his latest inspiration.

And a snippety peek…

Nate buzzed with a million ideas. "Hunter Gant, you're a lifesaver." He entered his cottage on its corner lot and went directly to his writing nook.
The small alcove had a wall lined with floor to ceiling bookcases that held many of his reference books, a wall with double windows, which let in lots of natural light, and a third wall that included his work area, an L-shaped desk with his PC, laptop, and several writing aids—inspiration boards, a phone docking station for playing music, and a huge white board he used to refine story points.
Settling behind his desk, he switched on the lamp—not much natural light streaming through the windows at five a.m. Opening his laptop, he started typing as soon as the empty document appeared on the screen. He filled ten pages by dumping the contents of his brain through his fingertips flying over the keys.
His mouth kicked up in a grin. "Thank you, Hunter." Her family history provided a solid backdrop for his newly forming character—Fiona O'Leary, heir apparent to a supernatural legacy of solving the unsolvable.
He saved the notes then leaned back and closed his eyes. "Fiona is uniquely situated. Her dad's side of the family is involved in law enforcement; her mom's side all own pubs. Fiona has a foothold in each, running a detective agency and working as a bartender in two of the pubs on the side." He nodded, loving the vision sparking to life in his head.
Grabbing a notepad, he jotted character traits, all coming from Hunter. He focused on her green eyes, sketching from memory and filling in with some colored pencils. Tearing the page, he tacked it onto one of his inspiration boards.
He spent the next several hours filling in backstory. How Fiona got her start as a supernatural detective; how her family of cops and bar owners referred clients to her and how she used them as resources. The law enforcement side gave her access to police reports and autopsy findings. The pubs offered up a place for her to tap into the preternatural world by providing a gathering spot for fae creatures and other paranormal beings.
Once the world took shape, he started on the other characters. Fiona would have love interests in both facets of her work.
He made a note in the margin of the page. "At least two in each. She won't find her true match until at least book five." Five… out of a dozen.
Yes! He had at least a dozen, maybe more. Creative fires burning, he continued typing, writing, refining, and outlining until his eyes almost crossed with fatigue. Glancing at the time, he yawned. Ten a.m. Five hours of nonstop work. He'd take it.
Especially after three days of pretty much nothing.
Leaving everything out and open, he got up and stretched the kinks out of his muscles. "Time for a shower and a few hours of sleep."
Then another session of work and maybe a visit with his new-found muse.

I'm having a lot of fun writing Nate and his inspiration. Hunter's story will unfold a little slower and she'll reveal her secrets a little at a time.

That's it for this week. Happy reading!

Sunday Snippet: Monumental Headache

As someone with family and friends who have served or are serving in the military, I'd like to thank all of our service members for their courage, sacrifices, and efforts. Thank you.

It's been a rough week with two difficult manuscripts and the end of daylight savings. Seriously, I've been all out of sorts and my internal clock hasn't caught up yet. LOL

I didn't get a lot of television in this week—see above for why—but I did stay current on usual shows. The Last Ship killed off another of my faves, which means I'm trying to prepare for a high body count in the finale. A box of tissues and alcohol might be involved. Just saying.

Arrow kicked some butt. I'm kind of liking the flash forward stuff, especially because the flashbacks are a thing of the past for the most part. I'll give kudos to Stephen, Emily, and Katie because I think they're doing some stellar work. The rest of the cast is on point also. Riverdale's Midnight Club episode rocked. The more batshit this show gets the more I seem to enjoy it. And it's definitely over the top.

Legends of Tomorrow keeps delivering great episodes. I'm always excited to see who's going to interact with whom. The constantly changing dynamic of the cast is so much fun.

I did catch an episode of The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency and, honestly, I love this show. It's going to go down as one of my favorite viewing experiences. I also caught an episode of Classic Who and finished up an episode of Midsomer Murders.

That's it on the television front. Tonight's post is from Monumental Headache, a novella that started with a two-word prompt of "screw you".

Here's the mini-blurb:

Cadee Walsh has a high stress job and needs to blow off steam. She spends the night with Worth Pettigrew, recharging from the incredible sex. Imagine her mortification when she finds out he's her new boss.

And a snippety peek…

Cadee Walsh exited the Canal Boulevard Spinal Care Clinic and locked the door behind her. "What a long, effing day." Shouldering her tote bag, she started for the parking lot.
"Cadee, you worked late tonight."
The voice startled her and she fisted her keys, letting the notched ends stick out between her fingers. She relaxed a little when Matt Debrewers emerged from the shadows of the building. The physical therapist had clocked out well over an hour ago. Cadee stayed behind to enter her patient assessments into the system and close out the files for billing. They'd had close to a hundred visits today for new consultations, adjustments, and therapy.
Cadee gave a nod and started for her car. "Yeah, finishing up the day's business. Doing double duty until Wendy's back from vacation." The office manager left over a week ago for a cruise, leaving Cadee to pull up the slack. "What are you doing back? Did you forget something?" Pausing by the vehicle, she glanced over her shoulder.
Matt gave her a lopsided grin. "Thought I'd hit the gym." He jerked his head toward the building next door, a twenty-four facility they recommended to many of their patients. "Unless… do you want to grab a late dinner or something?" He started forward, his feet shuffling on the pavement.
Cadee held up a hand. "No, Matt. I won't be good company. It's been a long day and I'm beat." She'd worked until almost nine pm every night this week.
She actually wanted to hit her favorite pub and drown her fatigue in a huge burger with a side of fries and slaw and about half a dozen shots. And maybe she'd get lucky and find a hot man to unwind with. Anyone but Matt because work romances usually got awkward and Cadee didn't have patience for the gossip in a tight-knit office environment.
After placing her order, she propped her elbows on the bar and waited for the tequila shot to arrive. Bart, the bartender, settled the glass in front of her and she lifted it wearing a smile. Toasting her favorite employee, she downed the liquid in a single gulp. "Ah… that hits the spot." Turning the glass upside down, she tapped the counter for another one.
Her food arrived and the aroma made her mouth water.
"That looks pretty damn good. I'll have what she's having."
Cadee shot the speaker a sideways glance and straightened on the stool. Well, hello, handsome. A slow once-over revealed a prime specimen of manhood, wearing well-worn jeans, a tight t-shirt that showed off broad shoulders, a defined chest, and gorgeous biceps. Her night looked infinitely better than it did thirty seconds ago.
She patted the chair beside her. "This seat's definitely not taken if you're looking for a place to park yourself." Waving a hand over her plate, she flashed a smile. "You won't find a better burger anywhere in the city."
He slid his sculpted ass onto the seat and he snagged a fry from the basket. "Fries look good, too." Popping it into his mouth, he closed his eyes in bliss.
Cadee grinned. "You and I… are going to get along really well."
And if she had her way, they'd end up back at her place for dessert.

Oh, Cadee, beware what you wish for… it might come true but not in the way you're hoping for. LOL

That's it for this week. Happy reading!

Sunday Snippet: Mixed Signals

We're entering the next to last month of the year… how did ten months already fly by? I got some scary news earlier in the week. My younger sibling had a major heart attack while at work and ended up having surgery to put stents in. He's actually doing terrific, considering it's one of the worst types of cardiac infarctions. I'm so very grateful I still have him around.

Needless to say, television viewing ended up being limited this week. The Last Ship killed off one my favorite characters and I’m still mourning that loss. Thankfully, The Flash had a pretty terrific episode and I love the introduction of meta-tech. Arrow is doing a great job of keeping me interested. I didn't know how I'd end up liking the whole prison angle, but I'm very satisfied with how it's playing out. Legends of Tomorrow remains excellent. I'm always surprised by how fast the hour flies by when I'm watching.

I caught another episode of The Sarah Conner Chronicles. I'm about halfway through the season and the end is being shaped. I truly forgot how much I loved this show. Also caught another episode of Birds of Prey. Stylistically, I love how this series plays out on the screen. Caught another episode of Lexx and completely forgot about Stan's trial. I actually enjoyed this one.

Doctor Who's episode with spiders ended up being pretty good. I'm never sure how I'll take to episodes with creepy-crawly things. Somewhat disappointed there won't be a Christmas special this year but having a New Year's show could be fun. We'll see.

Got another episode of Pensacola Wings of Gold in. Enjoyed seeing how that one played out. I'm almost finished with the first season and I'm not sure if I'll continue on because it seems like the second series has an almost entirely new cast. I'll watch a few episodes and see what happens.

Caught another Hallmark movie, Hannah's Law. Ended up being pretty decent. I watched mainly for Greyston Holt, a favorite actor of mine.

Rounded out the week with some classic television marathons. The Saint throughout the week and Burke's Law this weekend.

That's it for television this week. Tonight's post is from Mixed Signals, a novella that got a start with a what-if scenario involving friendly fire and an old relationship.

Here's the mini-blurb:

Avery and Trigg, both undercover cops, can't keep their relationship going. Their work makes it hard to stay connected. When mixed signals results in Avery shooting Trigg in a friendly fire incident, she wants to set the record straight and maybe test the waters to pick up where they left off.

And a snippety peek…

A knock sounded on the door and Trigg opened his eyes. The TV droned in the background, but the pain meds kept him drifting in and out of wakefulness. The wood slab pushed open and Dinah entered the room. His lips curved in a smile.
But only for a moment. Dinah wore resignation on her face and had reluctance in her step. She pulled her hand from her pocket and dangled the apartment keys from her fingers.
Trigg didn't need verbal confirmation. They were finished. Truth told, he didn't have it in him to fight for her right now.
He winced when he sat up straighter and dug his shoulders into the pillows behind his back. "You're cutting out?" Did he care?
He couldn't honestly say he did.
Dinah put the keys on the patient tray at his bedside. "I have to, Trigg. I can't handle this. You getting shot… just… it's my wake-up call." Her hands went back inside her pockets and her shoulders hunched forward.
Trigg made a stab at salvaging the relationship. "Dinah, I've been a cop for over a decade. This is the first time I've been injured on the job." Didn't mean it wouldn't happen again but a bus could him tomorrow, too.
Dinah shuddered. "You say that like it's no big deal. Once in a decade is still one time too many." She turned for the exit. "I'm sorry, Trigg. I can't do the be-strong thing and hope for the best." Pulling the door open, she lifted a hand. "Good-bye."
Heaving a sigh, he didn't stop her. And he didn't respond. She didn't need a farewell from him. Not when she'd made a decision without even discussing it with him.
Finding the remote, he switched off the television. Getting dumped in the hospital while recovering from a bullet wound had to be a new low. And he'd had some pretty serious downs.
Like getting shot by your ex.

This one is coming together in little pieces at a time. The sages have a good idea of what they want but their delivery is out of order. Go figure.

That's it for this week. Happy reading!
