Sunday Snippet: Quick on the Draw

As usual, the weather in Ohio is crazy. Snow and cold to start and last most of the week and a semi-thaw today with a ton of rain and wind. It's supposed to get cold again by next weekend. Sigh.

Kind of a slow week for television. I had several work deadlines that needed a lot of my attention and focus. I did get some viewing in though.

Finished up the Killjoys season and, holy crap, I'm truly ready for next season already. Where they left things? Yeah, I need to know what happens.

Caught another episode of Painkiller Jane and it was another one I didn't remember for the original airing. A pretty good one, too.

I watched an episode of Underbelly: Razor and I gotta say I'm really mad at Kate. That's the whole point but the whole deal with Bruce just burns my chaps. Tillie and Nellie are ripe for a downfall and I'll be interested in seeing how that comes about.

Caught the third episode of Endeavour and really enjoyed the case and hints dropped about the robberies. I like that there's something of a through line into the next episode. At least I hope that's what will happen. The robbery guys are total doltheads, just saying.

Watched one of my favorite episodes of The Sarah Conner Chronicles and I’m almost at the end of the road for the series. I really forgot how terrific and ahead of its time the show is.

Caught the third episode of Roswell, New Mexico. I'm truly loving this show and have become quite a fan. Here's hoping it gets a second season.

I'm two episodes from the end of Birds of Prey. Watched "Reunion" this week and enjoyed how Barbara and Helena discovered some internal truths. Also caught the first episode of Pensacola Wings of Gold season two. Not sure about continuing but I did like how they transitioned from the previous season.

Started episode four of Strike Back. Got distracted by work so I'll have to finish it up in the near future. Hopefully the very near future.

That's it for television this week. Tonight's post is from Quick on the Draw, a sexy short that started with a scene-staging prompt of hanging upside down on a playground with a water pistol. I put a bit of a spin on the prompt.

Here's the mini-blurb:

Willa Hown opens her property to paintball enthusiasts on the weekends and enjoys the antics of grown adults finding their inner child. Kip Jarvison rarely takes time off but his brothers drag him to Willa's place for a weekend of fun and messy sport. Kip's not thrilled—until he meets Willa and she shows him how much fun paintball can really be.

And a snippety peek…

Willa grabbed her cleaning gear and loaded up the utility vehicle. "Only decent thing moron Nash ever talked me into." They'd made the purchase at Christmas and she'd already put it to good use plowing the driveway and hauling firewood.
Climbing in behind the wheel, she pulled out of the garage to head out to the campers by the pond. "Now I get to brave the mud and see if this can handle the path out there." She didn't doubt the UTV could make the trip, more whether she could maintain her calm and get one of the small trailers cleaned up to house guests.
Dammit, Nash.
They weren't really ready for prime time. She'd talked Nash into making the purchase. Helped they bought the trio of castoff campers from family members who'd upgraded. The original plan had been to offer them for weekend packages starting during the summer season.
Stopping outside the largest one, she grabbed her bucket and cleaning supplies. "Guess a trial run won't hurt." At least she'd had time to renovate the big one that slept six.
Nash suggested she start with it because it held not so pleasant memories of cousin Artie threatening to kick Nash's ass.
She snorted. "Not sure it'll sleep six comfortably, but three brothers should be able to bunk in without too much trouble." Maybe not having Nash here wouldn't be a bad thing.
Making quick work of spot-mopping the floor and checking the lights, water to the sink and bathroom, and turning on the heating unit, she'd loaded up the UTV when the crunch of tires started down the long drive to the pond.
Dusting off her hands, she waited for the SUV to come to a stop before flashing a smile and waving to Kyle, sitting in the back seat.
He got out and made his way over to her. "Hey, Willa. Thanks so much for letting us come." His sheepish grin made dimples in his cheeks.
Willa shrugged and pulled him into a one-armed hug. "No problem. Of course, Nash didn't tell me he set this up until this morning." She rolled her eyes and Kyle shook his head.
The two brothers emerging from the car bore a family resemblance. Kell—she assumed—ran up and grabbed Willa in a big bear hug, lifting her off her feet and spinning her around. She let out a startled shriek and hung on for dear life.
He settled her back on her feet. "Hi, I'm the middle brother, Kell. And what my baby brother means is we're thrilled you didn't kill Nash for dumping his roommate and his brothers on you at the last minute." He stuck out his hand and tossed Kyle a look over his shoulder.
Laughing, she grasped Kell's palm. "Hi, I'm Willa. You're obviously familiar with my brother's shortcomings." She shot Kyle a quick look. "And his bad habits." One day, Nash would cross the wrong guy.
Good thing Kyle had such a laidback attitude.
Kyle's lips curved. "Eh, he had the right moves and I didn't. No big loss." He jerked his head toward the final sibling. "Besides, gives me a chance to spend time with my oldest brother."
Her gaze followed his line of sight and she shifted her attention to the last guy. Holy hell. Where Kyle had quick wit and dimples and Kell had exuberant enthusiasm, the oldest brother had a dreamy, dark and handsome thing going on. His sharp features, high cheekbones and a strong chin, matched his siblings's but in a starker way. This guy had depth and lots of it.
Which made sense, being the oldest. Something Willa had a wee bit of experience with.
She stepped forward, giving him a nod. "Hi, it's Kip, right?" She put her hand out in welcome.
He tilted his head to one side and studied her a moment before grasping her palm in a firm grip. "Uh, yeah, dibs." He blinked and shook his head. "I mean, Kip. The name is Kip."
A shiver of awareness coursed through Willa, but she raised an eyebrow. "You sure about that?" She hoped she injected enough sass into her tone to keep things from going into awkward territory.
Kell groaned. "Aw, man. It figures the first woman he shows an interest in forever happens when it's our boys' weekend." He made a dramatic show of indignation.
Kyle looked from Kip to Willa and back again. The speculative gleam in his eye put Willa's red flag firmly in the ground. Time to wrangle control of her group and get them into their weekend digs.
She held up a hand. "Kell, fear not, I won't be getting in the way of your bonding experience. I'll get you outfitted every day but I'll be up at the house otherwise." She started walking toward the trailer, shooting a quick look over her shoulder. "Kyle, don't even think about it. Whatever revenge scenario you've got brewing in your head involving using me and your brother to mess with Nash isn't going to happen." Opening the door, she stood back to let the guys into the camper.
Kyle and Kell bounded inside, leaving their bags by the SUV. Kip picked up his overnight case and slung the strap over his shoulder. He made slower progress, his gaze sweeping over the trees surrounding the pond on the north side.
He paused at the door. "This is a terrific area."
Willa snorted. "Seriously? You're going to comment on the surroundings after you basically called ownership?" She almost felt bad about giving him shit.
But not quite.
Kip flushed. "I didn't really. More like…" His voice trailed off and uncertainty and maybe a little disbelief crept into his gaze.
Willa supplied a response, still not ready to let him off yet. "Staked your claim? Marked your territory?" Her lips twitched, but Kip didn't notice.
Instead, he frowned. "That's not really what happened." He didn't sound like he believed himself.
Her eyebrows shot up. "I grew up with guys. I'm pretty sure that's exactly what happened. I mean, I can keep going if you want, until I hit the right phrase." Why not be helpful, right?
Kip dropped his bag on the steps of the trailer. "I thought you only had a brother?"
She smirked. "I do. But we have a crap ton of cousins. All guys. I'm the only female on both sides." Her inside knowledge came in handy sometimes.
Kip sat down on the top step. "Okay, fine. I acted like a caveman and basically told my brothers to back off the female." He shook his head. "Not a normal reaction when I meet women, even really hot ones like you." He met her gaze. "I'll forget it happened if you will and please accept my apology."
Willa smiled. "I'll absolutely accept your apology… but who says I want to forget it happened?" Backing up, she held his gaze when she made her way to the UTV. "The water and gas are on so you guys can get settled in. I'll be back down around four to get you loaded up on paintballs and explain where the staging areas are." She got behind the wheel and started the engine. "Nice to meet you, Kip Jarvison."

I truly enjoy writing the sibling banter in this story. I can't wait to get Willa and Kip alone so they can compare notes on their brothers among other fun things.

That's it for this week. Happy reading.

Sunday Snippet: Quick on the Draw

Whew. Crazy busy weekend with my daughter's first high school homecoming. Very glad to have a day to recover. LOL

In television this week, Gotham keeps pulling out the stops and taking twists I'm not expecting. I like that. Keep bringing the crazy, please.

Caught up on Agents of SHIELD. The season feels a little choppy so far, but I'll keep watching to see if the flow smooths out a little. I'll honestly say I'm slightly tired of the whole constantly being betrayed by someone on the inside scenarios. Here's hoping that isn't what's going on.

The Flash is doing a pretty decent job of explaining the reset of the timeline and how it's bled over into the other verses. A little tripped up over the gender swap on Arrow. I'll say nothing else in case folks are behind.

I kind of like Oliver having to train a new team on Arrow. Really not sure about the whole Felicity thing. Reserving judgment until more of the season plays out. Diggle's in dire straits again, which, eh, could get old fast.

Legends of Tomorrow rocked!! I rather miss Snart not being with the team and Rip is hopefully not completely lost. Mick is a total riot and I'm kind of liking how he's meshing with the team.

MacGyver had another good episode. It's a fun Friday night show and the cast works well together. A little disappointed with the Penny character, but it's her introduction so we'll see how things play out there.

Van Helsing still isn't quite doing anything for me. Maybe this is a show I need to binge watch to really sink into the storyline. We'll see what happens.

The Walking Dead returns next week. I'm still "meh" about the premiere. That could change in a week. LOL

And that's it for TV this week. Tonight's post is from Quick on the Draw, a sexy short that started with a scene prompt from one of my writing communities—hanging upside down, playground, water pistol.

And snippety peek…

Willa groaned and dug around for her phone. "Ugh, what?" The ringtone indicated her brother would be on the other end.
Nash made a tsking sound. "Are you still in bed? What's up with that, Wills?"
She glanced at the clock. "It's not even eight yet, you moron. Yes, I'm still in bed." And she planned to stay there until well after ten. "Wait, why are you calling, Nash? Tell me you're not in jail somewhere." Wouldn't be the first time she'd had to bail her brother out.
He laughed. "Of course I'm not in jail. Swore I wouldn't call you if I ever got arrested again, didn't I?"
Well, yes, he had. Not that she'd ever hold her breath waiting for him to remember things like promises and responsibility.
She flopped back down on her pillow. "Then why are you calling?" On a weekend, in the morning, when she wanted to sleep?
Nash let out a sheepish chuckle. "Well… I kind of booked a three-day package for my roommate and his brothers for this weekend. They should be arriving around ten."
Willa bolted upright. "Goddammit, Nash, you did what?" Willa wished she could reach through the phone and strangle her brother.
He got defensive. "Whoa, Wills. Calm down." He covered the phone and spoke to someone then came back on. "Yeah, I told Kell he should stop by our place and have some fun." He waited a beat. "Really didn't think you'd mind, sis. I mean, you like Kell and all. And his brothers are really cool." He kept rambling. "At least Kyle is. Only met the other one, Kip, once. But he seemed okay and—"
Willa cut her brother off. "Stop. What aren't you telling me?" Nash never blathered on unless he had a guilty conscience.
Nash took a moment to reply. "I told them they could stay gratis." He continued in a rush. "They'll bring their own food and gear and they can stay in one of the trailers. All you'll have to do is get them fitted out for their daily battles." Another muffled conversation took place in the background.
Willa didn't need a jolt of caffeine to add two plus two. "Nash, you have three seconds to tell me why you did that." Dammit, she had a lovely solo weekend planned.
Just her time. Movies, ice cream, mani / pedi. Pigging out on junk food. And her stupid brother ruined the whole solitary girl power fun.
Nash heaved a sigh. "Well, I sort of horned in on a sweet thing Kyle had his eye on. Least I can do is let him have a kick ass weekend while I spend some time with Luna." The sound of lips smacking together and giggle from his side of the line.
Willa flopped back down again. "Geez, Nash. Does the guy code mean nothing to you? If you'd pulled that shit with anyone else, you'd be toast right now." Actually, he had moved in on someone before.
Their cousin Artie still threatened to kick Nash's ass on a regular basis over the underhanded tactic.
Nash's voice went low and quiet. "Willa, you haven't seen Luna. She's totally worth bending the rules for."
Willa rolled her eyes. "Whatever, Nash. You can call Kell and tell him to come a different weekend. I have plans."
Her brother sputtered. "What? No, no way. I told you they're already on their way. What do you mean you have plans? You never go out, Wills."
His assured tone irritated her to no end. "Didn't say I was going out. I said I have plans." She sat up again and untangled her legs from the sheets.
Nash peppered her with questions. "Did you meet someone? Are they spending the weekend with you? When did this happen?"
Standing up, Willa stretched out the kinks from sleeping. "No. No. And it didn't. I don't have some hot guy waiting in the wings." She paused a moment. "And I wouldn't tell you if I did."
Nash made a disgusted sound. "Then, dammit, Willa, there shouldn't be a problem with Kell and his brothers coming to stay. They don't get to see each other often and this weekend means a lot to them."
Willa scoffed. "You said Kell and Kyle have dinner at least once a week. They see each other more than you and I do." She entered her bathroom and started the water to brush her teeth, putting the phone on speaker.
Nash explained. "Yeah, but the oldest brother, Kip, travels all the time. They talked him into taking a few days off to have a sibling bonding weekend." He whined. "You've gotta let them stay, Wills. Who knows when Kip will be around long enough to have a paintball massacre with his bros again?"
Willa frowned. "What does Kip do?" Nash drove her batshit on a good day, but they had each other's backs, spent holidays together, and ran the business in the summers.
Nash answered. "He's some global accounts manager for a coffee company. Hits Canada and Mexico regularly and apparently travels to Europe at least once a year." He covered the phone again and spoke briefly to the mysterious Luna. "Anyway, Kell managed to rope Kip into this weekend getaway and I don't want to let him down."
Right. "Because you're hooking up with the woman of his dreams." She shook her head and left the bathroom, heading for the kitchen. "And nowhere near here to play host. Thanks for that, Nash." She pushed the on button and started the coffee.
Nash grumbled. "Yeah, sorry about that, Willa. But I'll make it up to you this summer. You can take a whole week and hole up in some unnamed place for a mega movie marathon and junk food pig-out."
Willa's lips curved. "You can bet your ass I'll be holding you to that promise."

Willa may have to change her tune when she meets Kip. Why have a week of watching movies and chowing on junk food when a sandy beach with a hot guy might be on the table?

That's it for this week. Happy reading!

Sunday Snippet: Quick on the Draw

Season finale for Defiance… sooooo good. Seriously, I hope it gets renewed. Without giving away too many spoilers, I kind of loved where some of the characters ended up. I'm kind of on the fence about Amanda, but won't say more to avoid spilling anything.

The Walking Dead is almost ready to premiere and Sons of Anarchy rides next week. Makes waiting for Arrow's return in October worth it. Also looking forward to Sleepy Hollow and Gotham. Crossing my fingers FOX won't muck either of those shows up too much.

Enough TV for now. Tonight's post is from Quick on the Draw, a short story about a fun weekend that leads to new insight for my main character.

Here's the tagline:

Willa Hown opens her property to paintball enthusiasts on the weekends and enjoys the antics of grown adults finding their inner child. Kip Jarvison rarely takes time off but his brothers drag him to Willa's place for a weekend of fun and messy sport. Kip's not thrilled—until he meets Willa and she shows him how much fun paintball can really be.

And a snippety peek…

Kip shook his head. "Why did I let you guys drag me here again?" He had a 'to do' list filled with enough tasks to carry him through the next decade.
Kell rolled his eyes. "Because you need to let loose and have some fun, bro. You never do anything with us anymore." He stuck his lower lip out for good measure.
Kip snorted. "Yes, I do. Why just last week—" No, he'd been in Montana the last two weeks.
And before his stint in big sky country, he'd traveled throughout Canada, starting in Peterborough, Ontario and crossing the provinces to end up in Hollywood North, aka Vancouver. Damn. He'd spent two months in what his brothers referred to as the great white north.
Kip snapped his mouth shut.
Kyle slapped him on the back. "Yeah, dumb ass, we haven't done anything together since Christmas and New Year's." He leaned against the cushion of the back seat. "You left on January third and we've seen you maybe three times since." He ticked off Kip's itinerary. "Appalachia, New England, the great white north, and Montana." He folded his arms over his chest. "You bailed on Kell's last spring break. Hell, you almost missed his graduation."
Kip scrunched down in the passenger seat. "I made it."
Kell shot Kip a look. "Right, about five minutes before my name got called." His grip tightened on the steering wheel. "And you had to fly out for Bozeman that night. It's not gonna kill you to spend three days doing something with us."
Kip straightened. "Did I say it would? No, I didn't." But he hadn't been thrilled either and his brothers never missed anything. "But why paintball?"
Kyle snorted. "Because it's challenging and fun. We can relive our childhood and spend quality time together.
Kip settled back again. "Has it really been almost six months since we've spent more than a few hours together?"
Kell slid Kip a sideways glance. "Yep. So suck it up and deal."
Kip frowned. He'd obviously been working too hard if he didn't even notice how fast the time flew.
He nodded. "Yeah, no problem." He angled a little sideways. "You said your roommate's family owns the place?"
Kell answered. "Just Nash and his sister, Willa. They're parents are gone, about five years now."
Kip and his brothers understood losing parents at a young age. Their dad died in a house fire while trying to save a family and their mom checked out of life, leaving her boys with their fraternal grandmother so she could go off and find herself. The way Kip figured things; she'd done them a big favor. Grandma June, better known as Gram, raised them right. Her death the summer following Kell's last year in high school hit hard.
Kip changed the subject. "Will Nash be there?"
Kell chuckled and glanced in the rearview mirror. "Ky, care to answer that one?"
Kyle huffed out a harsh breath. "Hell, no, he won't be there. We met a totally hot girl on spring break—"
Kell broke into the conversation. "One Ky had his eye on—"
Kyle thwapped Kell on the head. "Yeah, yeah." He directed his attention back to Kip. "Anyway, they hooked up and stayed in touch. He's spending the next few weeks trying to 'woo' her." He made air quotes.
Kell translated. "Meaning he's trying to keep getting laid."
Kip laughed. "Apparently I missed a hell of a lot." He needed to stop missing so much. "So the sister runs the paintball business by herself?"
Kell shook his head. "Only on the weekends until June. Nash will be back to help her out with the full summer season."
Kip cocked his head sideways. "Sounds like a cool set-up. I'll bet we have a great time."
Kyle threw up his hands. "Finally! He's on board."
Kip didn't respond. He let his middle finger to the talking.
I love writing sibling conversations and when Willa joins the fun the banter goes up several notches. J

That's it for this week. Happy reading!
