Get Hooked: Reel in a Great Book—Fantasy Exchange #MFRWAuthors #MFRWHooks

Whew. After an extremely long hiatus from participating in the Book Hooks, I'm finally back and looking forward to diving into some great excerpts.

For my selection, I'll be featuring Fantasy Exchange, a fun romp where work and play create a little friction.

This week, we get to know Vas and Kelsey.

Book Tagline: A fantasy exchange leads to hot action for Kelsey and Vas.

~*~

Kelsey walked into the Rec, a former motor pool storage facility located on a decommissioned base, which served as their corporate headquarters. A retired team member turned the place into a bar where the covert operations teams could relax, unwind, and speak freely about their missions. Not open to the public, the Rec didn't show up with a listed address or owner anywhere. In five years of operation, not a soul had stumbled onto the place. Kelsey considered the rundown building a little slice of heaven. The facade didn't look like much on the outside, but the inside looked like a dream. Part retro summer camp, part rustic hunting lodge, the combination just worked—at least for Kelsey.
Joe stood behind the bar, wiping down a set of glasses. He jerked his head toward a large, round table and lifted a questioning brow.
Kelsey nodded. "Perfect, Joe." She made her way to his side, ducking behind the bar. "I'm grabbing the ice breaker box." Reaching under the shelf, she fished around until she found the smooth, wooden square.
Joe frowned when she stood up. "Tough one?" He stacked and lined the glasses up on a tray then brought out several bottles of alcohol. "From your earlier call asking for the run of the place, I kind of figured it might have been." Grabbing the goods, he started toward the table. "And now you're using the box. What the hell went down, Kels?" He placed the supplies in the middle then stepped back and glanced in her direction.
Kelsey shrugged. "Let's just say we're down one friend and up one foe and leave it at that for now." She carried the box to the table and looked up when team members started filing through the door. "Thanks for coming through, Joe. We need this."
Joe squeezed her bicep. "Always happy to help out. You know where to find everything." He wrapped an arm around her shoulders, hugging her close. "Leave the stuff when you're done. I'll clean up in the morning." With a wave to everyone, he strode to the back door and exited.
Kelsey's lips quirked when she faced the team, who each had a sheepish grin on their face. No doubt, all were feeling a little awkward about the cranky mood earlier and the reason for the rec special, but Kelsey figured they'd all snap back to normal in due course. Her quick head count showed one missing—Vas.
She glanced toward Stiver. His gaze slid to the door and sure enough, the metal slab opened to reveal their leader.
Kelsey relaxed and snapped her fingers. "Okay, let's get this debrief started." She handed the box to Vas. "You open and I'll draw?" The group found seats and settled down.
He snapped the hinge up and flipped the lid. "Sounds good." He waited until she rifled through the slips of paper and drew one, then closed the box.

Book Blurb: Vas Batista leads an elite team in and out of hot spots around the world for a private security company. A particularly grueling operation lowers morale and he decides the team needs a pick up. But he's not quite prepared for the ice breaker topic his second in command draws out of the box—name his ultimate fantasy woman. Considering Kelsey fits the bill, Vas can't very well name her.

Kelsey Drum loves working her dream job and can't ask for a better group of people to spend the bulk of her time with. When her CO wants a distraction she's always happy to provide one. But sharing her biggest fantasy? No way. Not when he's her number one pick.

Kelsey and Vas manage to avoid naming each other, but their interest is piqued. Kelsey quite literally catches Vas with his pants down and she comes clean about who she'd choose as her fantasy man. Vas admits she's his top choice and a meeting of minds and bodies follows. They embark on a fantasy exchange, but agree the work has to come first, no matter what. When Vas struggles to keep rule number one, Kelsey calls off the affair until Vas can deal.

Smokin' Hot—Hot Kiss: Busted in Bubbles

Welcome to the Hot for Friday blog hop!

Readers: Enjoy posts from authors with fun weekly tasks or a cool question.

Authors: Get in on the fun and join here.

Greetings!

This week we're tasked with sharing a hot kiss, whether it's slow, eager, passionate, a kiss can be many things. *sigh* Check out the smokin' smooches and enjoy! :D

For my feature, I'm posting a scene from a current release, Busted in Bubbles, a sexy short with some bath time fun.

For a little background, here's the book tagline:

Is there anything better than a bath time romp with a hot man? Emsley Bourne wants to find out.

Bring on the steamy smooches…

"Someone has to keep you on your toes, Ems. The whole short sheeting of my bed is fun and all, but come on… it's been a year." He leaned forward a little, his mouth hovering an inch from hers. "I think it's time to play something else, don't you?"
Emsley fought back a shudder. God, his voice sounded like good Scotch. Smooth, with just a touch of bite to it.
Her tongue flicked out, wetting her lower lip. "Something more grown up maybe?" She straddled his thighs and scooted forward until her hips were flush with his groin, his thick erection pressing against her. "I could go for that… if you're really game."
Rayne moved fast, capturing her lips in a very hot kiss. Emsley groaned low in her throat and gave herself over to the onslaught of sensory overload. His tongue swept inside her mouth and she responded, wrapping her arms around him, one hand traveling up to the back of his head, her fingers raking through his dark hair. The other slid down his back, drawing him closer. She wanted to feel his skin against hers. Craved the contact like an addict.
A first for her. She rarely felt a consuming need for sex. Then again, she'd had a thing for Rayne since the day they bumped into each other at his first conference three years ago. She'd gotten to know him, not well, but enough to know he found her attractive.

Book Blurb: Rayne McKinnon sells a lucrative security-consulting job and it's time to move on to his next objective: adding a partner. He wants Emsley Bourne, personally and professionally, and puts a plan in motion to achieve his goal. She only has to follow through with her usual tradition.

Emsley lives for the next thrill, in business and life. She's got a unique skill set and uses it to gain access to Rayne's cabin to follow through on her standard short-sheeting escapade. Imagine her surprise when she discovers Rayne soaking in a tub full of bubbles. Busted, she can either flee the scene—or join Rayne for some bath time fun.

Smokin' Hot—Book Girlfriend Celebrity Lookalike: Down in Mexico

Welcome to the Hot for Friday blog hop!

Readers: Enjoy posts from authors with fun weekly tasks or a cool question.

Authors: Get in on the fun and join here.

We already got to know our book boyfriend celebrity lookalike. For this week's entry, we get to cast our book girlfriend celebrity lookalike.

FUN!!!

As mentioned in my boyfriend casting post, I almost always have an actor or actress serve as inspiration when I'm writing. It's great to have visual imagery as a point of reference when creating characters.

I'd love to share my vision of loveliness for Down in Mexico, available now from Ellipses Press, Ltd.

So… without further ado…

Please meet the truly beautiful inspiration for Kiernan Darby.

Emily Bett Rickards

Emily totally steals scenes as Felicity Smoak in Arrow. I loved her the first moment she appeared on screen. :D She had almost the exact look I wanted when I wrote Kiernan, young but not immature, yet able to convey a worldly 'seen it all' vibe. Definitely not hard to cast Emily as Kiernan.

Book Tagline: Boy meets and falls for girl. Girl 'dies' in a fiery explosion. Five years later, they meet again.

Series Tagline: Mix a little danger with hot romance.

Kiernan scoffed. "Lars, I'm not stupid." She sat up and turned toward him. "I lined up new suppliers… use my new name in case there's any crossover." She leveled her gaze on him. "Believe it or not, I learned a lot from you guys during my stint of doing undercover work."
He still looked skeptical, so she added more.
"Look. I may not be able to kill people ninety-seven different ways, but I can cover my tracks." She gave him a pointed look. "Took you five years to find me."
He winced. "Two, but point taken." She'd been careful. He got it now.
"Hey, want some dinner?" The emotional turmoil combined with the magnificent sex had her stomach growling.
Lars looked at her askance. "Are you cooking?" She didn't blame him. She'd had zero talent in the kitchen five years ago.
She chuckled. "Not tonight." She had Thai takeout in the fridge. "But… I'll have you know I have mad cooking skills now." She'd learned from her neighbor. The woman ran a restaurant and had the patience of a saint.
Lars grinned. "You'll have to show me." He swung his leg over the edge of the bed. "Will you cook for me, Kier?"
She leaned down for a quick kiss. "You betcha. Tomorrow. Dinner. I'll cook." Shrugging into a robe, she nodded toward the closet. "There's a pair of my dad's old dungarees in there."
Lars flashed a grin. His clothes were still outside.
"Thanks. I'll be out in a few."
Kiernan tied the sash around her waist and headed out.

Series Blurb: Sun, sand, and danger. International intrigue mixes with steamy romance to create hot situations—South of the Border.

Book Blurb: Kiernan Darby spends five long years playing dead. It's a life in limbo, but it lets Lars Rademacher do his job and eliminate the members of a lethal crime syndicate, Kiernan's former employers.

After discovering she's alive and well, Lars tracks Kiernan down in Mexico. Their reunion is sweet… until he reveals a pesky detail he conveniently forgot to mention.

Get Hooked: Reel in a Great Book—Merry and Bright #MFRWAuthors #MFRWHooks

MFRW Authors Blog

Welcome to Book Hooks, the weekly smorgasbord sampler hosted by the MFRW Authors Blog.

Readers: get hooked and reel in some great books. Authors are sharing short excerpts from their work. Please enjoy and consider picking up the full book by clicking on the buy link.

Since the holiday season is gearing up, I'm sharing a series of excerpts from Merry and Bright, available now from Resplendence Publishing. Over the next few weeks, I'll post a few pivotal scenes between Presley, Gunnar, and Frazier.

This week, we meet Frazier.

Book Tagline: Presley wants to start some new holiday traditions, but waking up in bed with Gunnar and Frazier isn't what she had in mind. Yet… she can't think of a better way to be merry and bright.

~*~

By the time he left, the snow had accumulated to several inches and the temperature dropped at least ten degrees. Frazier shivered on the way to his car and loaded everything into the trunk and backseat. He got rid of the cart and slid behind the wheel, starting the engine quickly so the vehicle would warm up. Rubbing his hands together a few times, he reached into his pocket, grabbed his phone, and dialed Gunnar.
He answered on the second ring. "Dude, mission accomplished. You?"
Frazier chuckled. "Purchased, wrapped, and loaded. I'm heading out now." He checked the time on the dashboard clock. "Wanna meet at Barney's for a burger?"
Gunnar laughed. "Man, I'm already there. And you've got a double cheese with a side of waffle fries coming up in about ten minutes."
Frazier groaned. "Gunn, my man, I definitely owe you one." His stomach rumbled. "I'll be there ASAP. The damn roads are a bitch to navigate."
Gunnar snorted. "Take your time, bro. The plows are out, but so are the crazy people."
Frazier agreed. "I know. Glad I'm not on shift today." The car finally warmed up, and his windows defrosted. "I'm on my way. Later." He cut the call and tucked his phone back inside his pocket.
Backing out of his parking space, he grinned. The twelve days of Christmas theme had been a stroke of genius, and they'd pulled off the easy part.
The hard part would be surprising Presley.

Available from Resplendence | Amazon | BN | ARe

~*~

Book Blurb: After losing her parents, Presley Griffith will be spending the holidays alone, and wishes new traditions were easier to establish. But instead of being by herself, she ends up in bed with Frazier Boyle and Gunnar Stewart. The cop and the firefighter heat things up and cool them down and Presley can't think of a better way to be merry and bright.

Get Hooked: Reel in a Great Book—Creative Ink (A Black Unicorn Comic Adventure) #MFRWAuthors #MFRWHooks

Welcome to Book Hooks, the weekly smorgasbord sampler hosted by the MFRW Authors Blog.

Readers: get hooked and reel in some great books. Authors are sharing short excerpts from their work. Please enjoy and consider picking up the full book by clicking on the buy link.

I'm revisiting one of my first releases, Creative Ink, a Black Unicorn Comics Adventure and a sexy little short story designed to be a hot, quick read. I'll be posting a series of pivotal scenes over the next couple of weeks. Please enjoy!

No, the Black Unicorn Comic series isn't a comic book or graphic novel. Yet. But it is something of a different concept. The series is set around the adventures of the main couple and their co-workers for an indie comic book company and the stories are somewhat short with no more than four to six 'acts'. The idea came from one of my writing groups where we were challenged to come up with the idea for a TV show, cast the characters, and write a short story to create the visual. The overwhelming and positive feedback for Creative Ink convinced me to start the series.

Series Tagline: Black Unicorn Comics—collective genius or creative madness—follow the adventures of Brian, Lucy and their friends and decide.

Book Tagline: Brian and Lucy are on the verge of mainstream success—watch it happen in Creative Ink.

He let her have a few moments of fun before he turned the tables and worked her into a frenzy of need with his lips, tongue, and fingers, catching hold of her when she tried to dash up the stairs. The man had his own wicked good time, teasing and tantalizing, using feather light strokes, nips and flicks while slowly urging her up the steps.
Lucy indulged one of Brian's few requests and let him remove whatever lingerie she had on, since she so rarely wore it at all. He slid the straps of the purple satin down so slowly Lucy thought she might have to take matters into her own hands. He'd still been in the mood to tease, tempt, and torment her after getting her all hot and bothered on the way up the stairs.
He sped things up with the thong, hooking the scrap of fabric with one finger and giving it a few playful tugs until he cleared her feet. Shoving it off to the side, he delved between her legs and drove her mad with his tongue. He pushed her to the edge of orgasm twice before finally giving over control and letting her ride him to a mind-bending climax.
Lucy's bra hung from one of the iron knobs on the antique bed she'd inherited from her grandmother. A racy purple, the matching thong got buried somewhere under the frothy white comforter Brian's gran gave them as a housewarming gift when she'd visited from the UK.

Series Blurb: Black Unicorn Comics is on the cusp of huge indie success. Brian Wells and Lucy Sanderson are the driving force behind the accomplishment. Friendly rivals and romantic partners, they push each other to do great work. Surrounded by a close knit group of co-workers, the ups and downs play out on a daily basis.

Brian's ex works in the office and his best friend owns the press. Lucy's brother lives next door and has the major hots for the ex-girlfriend. A competitor wants to buy the company and convention season is just around the corner.

Brian and Lucy act as the calm in the crazy storm of creativity and keep their relationship burning hot—usually in spite of the antics going on around them. They follow where the muse leads and it's worked out successfully so far.

Book Blurb: Lucy and Brian—creative rivals and romantic partners—are pushing the boundaries of their work and stepping into the realm of indie success. They're challenged with keeping their relationship strong and hot when leading their friends up the ladder.

Lucy Sanderson sat in front of the monitor, eyes riveted to the screen.
So into the material, she almost missed seeing Brian Wells enter the office. She finished reading the page just as he settled into his seat across from her, a mug of hot coffee in his hand.
Lucy cocked her head sideways. "So…" She drew the word out. "Where do you get the shit in your head?" She fought back a smile when his confused eyes flew to hers over the top of the cup. "I mean does it just exist there waiting to come pouring out, or do you have to work at creating it?" She purposefully waited until he had a mouthful of coffee before she added. "Or does wanting me to be half naked all the time inspire you?"
To his credit, Brian choked down most of the hot liquid, managing to keep the bit that did spew out to a minimum. "Dammit, Lucy. You hacked my password again, didn't you?" He grabbed a napkin to wipe his chin.
Lucy gave him a cheeky grin. "I keep telling you to make it harder. Altering your birth date by a few days is too easy." She picked up her mug of coffee and took a drink.
Brian mumbled something she couldn't quite make out—probably a threat for payback. But she called him on the password thing all the time.
"If I make it too hard, I won't remember the bloody thing."
Lucy chuckled gleefully. Brian never failed to entertain her, and his British accent came out in full force when he got riled about something. Two of the many things she loved about him.

She sat up and leaned closer. "Seriously, Brian. The issue you're working on now is gonna blow people away."

Celebrate Your Freedom to Live, Love, & Read—Freedom Hop

Romance Beckons

Let freedom ring!

Welcome to the Freedom Hop, a great sampling of authors sharing short excerpts from their work. Please enjoy and consider picking up the full book by clicking on the buy link.

~*~

How wonderful is it to have the independence to choose how we live our lives, who we love, and what we read?

I'm lucky enough to have always had the choice and I've used my liberty to do what I love… write about hot romances between men and women, edit for authors who write about all kinds of love—from best friends who become lovers to same sex couples and relationships that include multiple partners, and read all of the above with voracious abandon.

When writing as Skylin O'Thomas, I tend to focus on contemporary romance, sometimes filled with those little relationship moments, but I also love to add a little adventure. There's something fun about weaving in tension with suspense or a perilous situation. It's also a joy to create adventure by adding a good bit of humor.

My latest release, Busted in Bubbles, is a short, sexy romp with witty banter and a man who's not afraid to own a tub of bubbles. If anyone is an X-Files fan, the idea behind the story came from an episode where Assistant Director Walter Skinner had no qualms admitting to soaking in a big bubble bath.

My hero, Rayne, sets the scene with loads of the sudsy froth—and champagne—then waits for Emsley to arrive. Needless to say, he convinces her to join him for some bath time fun.

The book was so much fun to write and I'm giving a digital copy away for this blog hop. Please leave a comment for your entry and tell me how you celebrate your freedom to live, love and read.

~*~

Book Tagline: Is there anything better than a bath time romp with a hot man? Emsley Bourne wants to find out.

~*~

With a smug smile, she crossed the living area and started up the spiral staircase to the loft. About five steps up, she froze, carefully listening and hearing water sloshing in the bathroom. Shit. Rayne must've skipped the fancy-pants dinner. Okay, could she still pull off her traditional short sheeting of his bed and still leave him none the wiser?
She pondered, considering her skill level against the chance he might discover her presence. Should she risk it?
Yeah. She loved a good challenge.
She started up the next step and stopped again. Wait… bath? What the hell? Curiosity ate its way through her intention of getting in and out. Rayne couldn't possibly be soaking in a tub. Hell. Yeah, he could… and he might have company. The thought bothered her… even if it shouldn't. She might find the combination of looks and brains a heady mixture, but it didn't give her any claim to his affections.
She hesitated. Indecision warred in her brain. She had zero desire to become a voyeur if Rayne had brought someone along for this trip and they'd decided to get kinky in the tub. She weighed her options. The possibility of finding him with some woman wrapped around him would be like a kick in the teeth, but…
Screw it. She made her way back down the steps, tip-toeing to the bathroom door.
She had to know if the do-it-all security expert liked to soak in a tub. Peeking around the corner, she bit her cheek to keep from laughing out loud. Sure as shit, Rayne McKinnon sat up to his shoulders in frothy bubbles. An open bottle of bubbly, nestled in a bucket of ice, sat beside the tub, a glass filled with the golden liquid held in one of Rayne's hands, dangling outside. His head rested on the rolled edge of the tub, eyes closed, his fingers lazily tilting the glass back and forth.

Get Hooked: Reel in a Great Book—Down in Mexico #MFRWHook

MFRW Authors Blog

Welcome to Book Hooks, the weekly smorgasbord sampler hosted by the MFRW Authors Blog.

Readers: get hooked and reel in some great books. Authors are sharing short excerpts from their work. Please enjoy and consider picking up the full book by clicking on the buy link.

Today, I'm starting something a little new. I'm going back to some of my earlier releases and sharing a few pivotal scenes—a new one each week for three to four weeks. Up first is Down in Mexico, book one of the South of the Border series, available from Ellipses Press, Ltd.

Book Tagline: Boy meets and falls for girl. Girl 'dies' in a fiery explosion. Five years later, they meet again.

Series Tagline: Mix a little danger with hot romance.

~*~

Kiernan Darby had spent the last five long years on her own.
She'd built up a solid clientele at her diving school—tucked away from the truly touristy parts of Mexico—and she restored boats on the side. Sailboats—nothing with engines. She kept a low profile about the restoration… she couldn't afford to draw the wrong kind of attention to herself.
She'd disappeared without a trace for a reason and needed it to stay that way.
Flat on her back, refinishing the hull of a sadly neglected thirty-two footer, Kiernan looked through the decay to the beauty it could be again. She hummed along to some salsa music blaring from her Mp3 player and worked to remove a patch of dry rot. Maybe her sixth sense kicked in… or plain old self-preservation, but she looked sideways through the stripped-to-the-studs bottom portion of her shed to see a pair of bare feet—bare male feet—making their way along the outer drive and headed toward her.
An eerie feeling gripped her and she scooted out from under the boat, slowly and quietly, keeping those incredibly awesome legs within her sight. She stepped toward the open bay door, her gun a quick grab away, and ended up shocked speechless by what she saw.
Sort of saw. The sun glared from behind, but she had no trouble making out the bad Hawaiian shirt, unbuttoned to show a glimpse of the buff male form underneath, nor did she miss the beat up denim cargo shorts, complete with frayed hems. The hair threw her. Long and shaggy, the trade winds created a mad-scientist type look that warred with the aviator shades hiding the rest of his face.
Even with all that, she knew who found her. Time hung, and the hand hovering close to the hidden gun quickly dropped to her side as his name hissed out on a breath. "Lars."
He took a step toward her, but stopped just short of touching her. "Hey." The grin that lit his face had one of her own answering back.
"Hey." Her eyes squinting, she watched him remove his shades and toss them over his shoulder.
"Everyone believes you're dead." His hand lifted, but stopped, like he couldn't be sure she wouldn't disappear if he touched her. "I thought you were dead."
"I am dead." And she had to stay that way.

Blurb: Kiernan Darby spends five long years playing dead.

Kiernan isn't completely safe. In fact, Lars is using her as bait to catch the last member of the espionage organization.

Get Hooked: Reel in a Great Book—Merry and Bright #MFRWHook

MFRW Authors Blog

Welcome to Book Hooks, the weekly smorgasbord sampler hosted by the MFRW Authors Blog.

Readers: get hooked and reel in some great books. Authors are sharing short excerpts from their work. Please enjoy and consider picking up the full book by clicking on the buy link.

Today I'll be sharing a glimpse of Merry and Bright, one of the Holiday Wishes releases from Silver Publishing. What? The temperature in Ohio dropped again and it feels like winter. J

Tagline: Presley wants to start some new holiday traditions, but waking up in bed with Gunnar and Frazier isn't what she had in mind.

~*~
Presley sat in the middle of happy chaos, surrounded by gifts, wrapping paper, and her two guys. "Look, I love being an auntie. My brothers keep thinking I need to get married and have a buttload of kids, but I'm perfectly content borrowing theirs." She laughed. "Dave, the oldest one, fears I'll end up an old lady surrounded by sixty cats."
Frazier narrowed his eyes. "Hmm. No, can't see that. Twenty-five, maybe, but not a cat over fifty."
Presley wadded up a pile of wrapping paper and threw it his way, striking his chest. "Shut up. They don't think I’m normal because I'm not in a huge rush to start dropping kids like they did."
Gunnar shrugged. "Sounds perfectly normal to me. Then again, I think I define the word a little differently than most." He kicked his feet out and leaned back against the couch. "To date, I've celebrated one"—he made air quotes—"traditional holiday with the works, and a mishmash of every other kind you can think of"—he ticked off the names—"Hanukah, Kwanza, Yule, and then we had the standard dinner, visit from Santa, and treats at the group home." He lifted his shoulder again. "Definitely something different all the time."
Presley gave him a sad smile. "Sounds a little lonely."
His lips quirked. "Sometimes, but seriously, not that often." He nodded toward Frazier. "What about you, Fraz?"
Frazier rolled his eyes. "Normal growing up, but over the last five years, more like a warzone." He got up and started gathering the torn wrapping paper. "If the folks weren't having a shouting match, my mom would go on and on about how insane her youngest son was for running into burning buildings instead of out of them." He jammed the festive packaging into a trash bag.
Gunnar snorted. "Dude, she's got a point." He ducked when Frazier tossed Presley's huge pillow in his direction.
Presley gave Gunnar a considering glance. "Says the hard-assed detective who steps into the line of fire." She shook her head. "You're both kinda crazy, but so very necessary."
Gunnar smirked. "It takes a special kind of weird to do what we do, right, Fraz?"
Frazier nodded. "You know it, bro."
Enjoying herself immensely, she got up and helped Fraz clear up the mess while Gunnar neatly stacked her new gifts under the tree. She plopped down on the couch, and the guys settled on either side of her.
Leaning her head back against the cushion, she said, "Guys. I have a confession to make." She propped her feet up on the coffee table. "I'm never, ever going to own a cat."
Frazier burst out laughing, and Gunnar's shoulders shook.
Frazier nudged her leg. "Pres, don't let your brothers get you down. You'll either find someone you want, or you won't. Felines don't have to be involved."
Gunnar rested his head on the cushion beside hers. "A dog might be nice, though."
