Sunday Snippet: Throw in the Towel

You know, I love a great fireworks display … but … I don't love almost a full week of random nonstop barrages from different locations where I can't even see them. Because at least I'd be able to enjoy something while my poor doggos are huddled against me shaking and freaking out. In all seriousness, I don't begrudge people having the funds and knowledge to celebrate with fireworks. But I also hate the first week of July for anyone who has pets that can't deal with the show.

It's been a weird week with a toilet repair followed by a washing machine leak that needed fixed. I'm still working on the leak because, seriously, it's never a simple thing when I'm involved. I'm crossing my fingers for not having anything else water-related to deal with this week.

Had another super busy week of work. I'm slogging through a very, very long proofread and I'm almost at the finish line. Completed a copyedit that ended up having some consistency concerns but ended up being such a great story. And it's a holiday book! I love editing holiday manuscripts.

Didn't get a lot of viewing in, mainly because the proofread is difficult subject matter and so long I don't want to risk losing my spot by getting distracted. I definitely don't want to do a lot of repeat work because I lose my place.

I did get to watch an episode of My Life Is Murder. I so enjoy this show. The characters are such a delight.

I also finished up the episode of Elementary that I started last week. I have to admit I'm not quite sure if I'm down with Mycroft possibly being a bad guy. My guess is he's working with someone we've seen before, and I have two people in mind. Stay tuned to see if I'm right.

And that's it for the life update this week. Tonight's post is from Throw in the Towel, a novella that brings a couple together while they compete on a fictional mud-run circuit.

Here's the miniblurb:

Taurin Beach and Craig Wallmartin are top competitors on the mud run circuit. When Craig is caught by a reporter with nothing but a towel, it gives Taurin the perfect idea for catching his attention and finally getting what she wants. Him.

And a snippety peek…

Taurin limped across the finish line in second place. "Serves me right." She'd taken a marked offshoot on the trail thinking it might be a fun challenge.
Instead, the detrimental detour ended up leaving her with a twisted ankle even if the alternate route didn't cost more time on the course. Slowing down to keep the injury to a minimum, she speedwalked the last half mile after putting a wrap on the affected foot. Some ice and elevation should get her squared away.
Her lips quirked. "And shouldn't mess up my plan to do the towel trick." Hopefully, she'd timed everything right.
Sure enough, as she'd predicted, Craig had a bevy of fans surrounding him, giving her a chance to duck into the shower area before him. She found an empty spot and turned on the water, stepping under the spray fully clothed. Fresh mud and caked-on dirt rolled off her body. Once clear of most, she yanked her shirt off and scrubbed her upper torso clean. Dropping her shorts, she followed suit with the lower half.
And, finally, she washed the sweat, pollen, and grit from her hair. "Ah … feels so much better." Finished, she turned the water off and grabbed her towel, wrapping the too small terrycloth around her midsection.
Her ass barely covered, she checked to see if Craig had entered the interior yet. Hot damn. She caught sight of his head above the partition separating the two shower areas.
Grabbing her rinsed gear, she rolled the wet clothes into a larger towel and walked into the communal space on the pretext of forgetting something. "Anyone find a black and red flip-flop?" Her question drew Craig's attention and—yes—his gaze dropped to her thighs and a flash of interest sparked in his eyes.
She turned, making sure he got a glimpse of her ass, and found the not-actually-missing shoe. "Never mind, I found it." Holding it up, she headed to the changing area and started dressing.
A big smile spread across her face. Mission accomplished. And as much as she hated to leave him hanging, she had to make tracks to head home and cover a help-desk shift for a coworker.
And put her foot up and ice it down so she'd be set for next weekend's run.

I have so much fun writing this story. Taurin and Craig are a joy to spend time with.

That's it for this week. Happy reading!

Sunday Snippet: Throw in the Towel

Hope everyone had a terrific US holiday and a terrific week if not in the US. I got to spend time with my oldest and youngest kiddos and enjoyed being able to do so. I think I have two more gifts and maybe some odds and ends to pick up and I'm done with holiday shopping. Fairly pleased to be a little ahead of my usual last-minute rush.

Had a good week of television viewing. I watched another episode of The Brokenwood Mysteries. This show continues to make me so happy.

Got a two-part Silent Witness watched. This is one I didn't remember and I'm glad I got to watch it.

Got a full arc of Classic Who in and started a new one. I've discovered a couple of episodes were almost an hour in this season, which is actually kind of cool.

Started a new series with Mysteries of Apollo and the first episode focused on the Apollo 13 mission and some of the in-depth history of that experience.

Began season five of The Muppet Show and watched four episodes. Gene Kelly, Loretta Swit, Joan Baez, and Shirley Bassey were the guest hosts. Final season of the original.

Caught two episodes of Fantasy Island and I'm still thoroughly enjoying the show. I think I have one left in this first season and I'll look forward to the holiday episode.

Started season six of Peak Practice. Great episode that moved the timeline ahead a little. Being at the halfway mark of the entire run is a nice accomplishment.

Enjoyed another lesson of MasterClass with Brandon McMillan. Some great tips on housebreaking that I hope to put into effect after I get my downstairs area organized.

Season two of Glitch started out with an interesting twist. This show is very twisty and turny and I like that. Looking forward to getting more information on how everything works and finding out if Sarah is another one of the risen. If so, poor James. Two women in his life? That's a lot.

Remember when I thought I finished the first season of Star Trek: Discovery? Yeah, not the case. I had two more episodes. Watched the penultimate this week and, wow, what a mix of highs and lows. This show. Just saying.

Started season three of Chicago Med. I like how they moved the timeline ahead and seeing where everyone ended up. Conor breaks my heart. April breaks my heart. Wil and Nat make me happy. The horrible new surgical resident irritates the life out of me. So far, so good. LOL

Watched another episode of The Madame Blanc Mysteries. I really love the dynamic of this show and the mystery this week ended up being terrific. Also love the overarching mystery of who killed Jean's husband. Interesting show.

That's pretty much it for this week. Tonight's post is from Throw in the Towel, a novella about competing mud run fanatics and how they end up finding their way to each other.

Here's the mini-blurb:

Taurin Beach and Craig Wallmartin are top competitors on the mud run circuit. When Craig is caught by a reporter with nothing but a towel, it gives Taurin the perfect idea for catching his attention and finally getting what she wants. Him.

And a snippety peek…

Taurin planned a truly bold move this time. She had her towel at the ready, clutched against her sternum. Craig entered the showers and caught sight of her, pausing a moment before grabbing his shower gear.

She looked around, making a show of searching for something.

Craig arched his brows. "Lose a flip-flop again?"

She snorted and paused her search. "Not this time." She messed with her towel, coming very close to showing her breasts.

He swallowed hard and quickly ducked into the men's side of the stalls.

She kept up a cursory search through the portable lockers.

Craig finished up and came out. "About earlier … for the record, I'm not that fond of all the attention."

Taurin shook her head. "You should be. You could have your pick of a different flavor every weekend."

Craig grimaced. "Yeah, not into the casual one-night thing. Not anymore."

Taurin cocked her head. "One woman kind of guy?"

He nodded. "Yeah, my juggling females days are over."

She brightened on the inside. Time to put her plan in motion.

She went back to rifling through the locker. "Dammit."

His brow furrowed. "What are you looking for?"

She glanced over her shoulder. "My fresh set of clothes. They're not with my gear."

Craig pulled his locker open. "I could loan you a shirt. Hold on."

Nice, but totally not what she wanted. "No, it's okay. I'm just around the corner." She dashed out, heading for her trailer.

"Wait!" Craig called out behind her.

She didn't, making a quick run to the camper, hoping he'd follow. She had her hand on the latch when he called her name.

"Taurin!"

She turned, noting he'd only thrown on a pair of shorts and looked incredible.

He jogged to her. "You left your stuff."

She nodded. "Yeah. Figured I'd get it after I got dressed." She looked down at the towel. "Didn't think I could manage to carry it and not lose my cover."

Craig's gaze dipped but he quickly looked back up. "Definitely not. You're in danger of losing it even now."

She smirked. If all went to plan, she'd definitely be uncovered soon.

This is so much fun to write. Taurin goes after what she wants and Craig tops her list!

That's it for this week. Happy reading!

Sunday Snippet: Throw in the Towel

It's so weird to be in the last week of the month. Sometimes it felt like August would never end and other times like it flew right by. I'm actually looking forward to September.

Busy week with work projects but I did get some shows watched. I started a new episode of Blue Heelers and so far enjoy the second season.

Caught several episodes of Peter Gunn. There's a marathon next weekend I'll probably end up watching also.

Watched the Tomb of the Cybermen episodes of Classic Who. I'm bummed there aren't a lot of the second doctor's episodes available for viewing.

Also caught another Midsomer Murders episode. I like the new guy. I also need to figure out when they started working for Midsomer Constabulary instead of Causton CID. Probably way back in a previous season and I just missed it.

I'm in the middle of a 77 Sunset Strip marathon. This is one of my favorite classic shows.

That's it for television this week. Tonight's post is from Throw in the Towel, a novella that started with a writing community prompt.

Hell, yeah, it will.
Craig mulled over Taurin's response with his gaze on her retreating back.
Maybe he should call her back and ask her to explain. "Okay, no. I don't need a connect the dots lesson." But the flash of… what? Disbelief? Interest? Whatever…
It threw him.
And the view of her ass in the clinging shorts didn't help.
He followed the women's stats and Taurin ranked at the top of the pack. He'd made a name quickly, to the point of having a few nibbles from sponsors. But Tauren?
"Hell, she outclasses me." For the most part.
He started the mud runs for fun but developed a passion for competing. His work in sales gave him lots of flexibility and he'd finally managed to map out his schedule to coincide with the weekend races. Kind of nice to bump into the same people and get to know them a little.
"And, man, I want to get to know Taurin Beach more than a little."
He couldn't do that standing in a damned towel.
After taking a quick look around for more nosy reporters, he finished dressing and shoved his dirty gear into his duffel bag. His mind drifted to Taurin again.
"I wonder what she does for a living?" He'd have to check the affiliation bios.
Exiting the tent, he spied Taurin sitting by the huge bonfire the event managers would get started at dusk. Maybe I won't have to check the bios. She no longer had her gear and she sat in a comfortable camp chair. She must be staying on site. He had a room booked in a hotel about five miles up the state route. Man, he envied her if she had a camper or a trailer. If he kept competing, he'd definitely look into investing in one.
Why not start the getting to know Taurin better thing right now?
He made his way over to her location and dropped his bag on the ground. She glanced up from reading something on her phone, her eyebrow arched in question.
He hunkered down, using his duffel to keep his balance. "Mind if I ask a personal question?" Hopefully, she'd keep the running banter they had in the shower area going.
Her lips curved with a sly smirk. "Guess that depends on how personal it is." She tucked her phone into the cupholder on the chair. "Ask me and I'll let you know if I mind."
Yep. Definitely keeping the banter up.

I like writing about potential competitiveness between characters. In this case, a mutual respect already exists so their rivalry will hopefully be fun.

That's it for this week. Happy reading!

Sunday Snippet: Throw in the Towel

If February in Ohio can be an angsty monster, March is its drama queen sibling. The wind is doing some wicked crazy things lately.

I'm kind of looking forward to The Walking Dead tonight. Of course, whether I watch the entire episode depends on if Negan makes an appearance. I really, really don't like him eating up screen time. No offense to the actor. He's terrific.

The Flash had another great episode. Dueling Harrisons is fun to watch. I'm truly wondering if Iris has a future on this show. I love the actress so I hope she does. That said, the CW isn't afraid to kill off favorites, so, yeah, there's that.

Arrow had another great episode. I had a sneaky suspicion about Adrian, especially after he mentioned Oliver stole his girlfriend back in the day. Season five is kind of up and down but the threads merge in ways I'm not usually expecting and I like that.

Riverdale is still holding my attention. I'm a little iffy on the jumbled up feeling I get, like there's not really a solid through-line, but I'm more than willing to hang in there and see where everything goes. I chuckle at their previously ons… I know a show that used to slip stuff that didn't make it onscreen into the previously ons… just saying.

Finished up season two of Daredevil and loved how everything came together. Looking forward to more with Matt, Foggy, and Karen. Started Jessica Jones and hit just over the halfway mark. It's not quite as great as Daredevil, in my viewer opinion, but I'm enjoying the acting and the characters. Okay, I'm not really excited about Hogarth, but eh, whatever.

And that's it in television this week. Tonight's post is from Throw in the Towel, a novella that got a start with the writing community prompt of "Towel-related hijinks". Such a fun idea!

Once she cooled down, she caught sight of Craig Wallmartin, the hot, hard object of her latest fantasies. Fit men made her weak in the knees and Craig could be a cover model for one of her books. Maybe all of them. He'd won the men's division and looked to be chatting with a rep from one of the shoe sponsors. He dripped with sweat and had mud and muck from head to toe—just like Taurin did. Then again, what screamed buy these shoes more than a walking epitome of demonstration? Schmoozing with a rep would be worth the itchy, caked on goodness when the course clay and debris started to dry.
But not for her.
Squeezing the mud out of her hair, she ducked into the mobile shower area the course owners had set up. Stripping off her disgusting clothes, she stepped under the hot spray, thanking the universe for the corporate cash kicking in the extra bucks for the huge comfort. She rinsed off the dirt, sweat, and—ouch—blood. A stray vine of a jagged prickly bush caught her just below the bicep.
"Might help if I learned to look where I'm going."
The small gash burned like hell but cleaned up okay. A little triple antibiotic and she should be good to go. She finished up with a double hair wash and finally turned off the shower.
Shivering a little, she wrapped a towel around her torso and quickly jammed her dirty gear into her duffel bag. Hoisting the bag over her shoulder, she started to exit the shower area into the changing room but paused when she heard voices. She hadn't heard anyone else enter the facilities.
"Mr. Wellmartin, Craig, can I get a few quotes for our viewers?"
Taurin poked her head around the partition separating the changing area from the central hub of the building. Sure enough, Craig stood—a towel wrapped around his waist and still wet and dripping from his shower—blinking at the brazen reporter from mudrunmainia.com. Lori Michels, if Taurin remembered correctly. And didn't the woman have some gall?
Craig's grip tightened on the terry cloth. "Lori, if you'll give me five minutes, I'll be happy to speak with you." He used his free hand to guide Ms. Michels toward the exit.
The woman protested. "Please, Craig, I'd really like to get a jump on everyone else…"
Taurin narrowed her eyes when Lori shifted sideways a little and Taurin caught sight of Lori's phone—recording the exchange with Craig.
Holy shit. The reporter would definitely have a jump on everyone else—an almost naked Craig would drive a buttload of traffic to mudrunmania.com site. Lori kept squirming around, trying to stay in the competitor's zone and Craig struggled to keep his towel covering his midsection. Lori, no doubt, got some very revealing footage.
Taurin couldn't stand the spectacle anymore. She dropped her duffel and rifled through for some clean clothes. Yanking a shirt over her head, she then pulled on some shorts and dashed out into the open area.
She planted her hands on her hips. "Hey, Craig, you might wanna check her phone. She's been recording your entire exchange."
His demeanor immediately went from friendly exasperation to angry disgust.
Lori shot Taurin a venom-filled look before she gasped and tried to play her ballsy move off as an accident. "I'm so sorry. I had no idea." She swiped the back button on the device and stopped filming. "Must've inadvertently hit the camera icon while you were trying to shoo me out." She batted her eyelashes.
Taurin snorted and rolled her eyes. My ass you didn't know exactly what you were doing.
Craig didn't buy the lame excuse either. "I doubt that." He shook his head and growled. "I think you've got what you wanted. Now, get out." He pointed to the exit.
Lori smirked and made a hasty retreat.
Taurin strode back to the women's side and grabbed the rest of her gear then slid her feet into her flip-flops. She turned around and almost bumped into Craig, still holding his towel in one fist.
Geez, the guy should come with a warning label—lethally hot, please don't get too close. Her gaze focused on the hard, bare chest a mere few inches in front of her. She resisted the urge—barely—to touch the smooth skin, marred by a single, jagged scar on his left pec. She'd love to trade war stories about battle wounds… in bed.
Glancing up, she found him giving her a hard stare and she quirked an eyebrow. "Yeah, sorry. Did you need something?" She squashed the desire to list the things she'd be happy to do for him.
He shook his head. "No, just… look, thanks." His voice had gone gruff and grumbly. "For, well, helping in there." His head jerked toward the changing area. "Can't believe she filmed me. I don't get it." He grimaced.
Her eyes widened at his discomfort. Did the guy have no clue? Maybe he didn't.
She flashed a grin. "Are you kidding? Mud Run Mania should pay you. You'll increase traffic and traction to their website once her video goes viral." She moved past him into the less intimate space of the changing area.
Other competitors started rolling in and she dumped her duffel bag on a bench, lifting a hand in greeting to a few.
Craig followed her after throwing on a pair of clean shorts. "Do you really think a video of me in a towel telling Lori to get out will generate that much interest?" He snorted.
Taurin blinked. He really didn't have any kind of idea how hot he looked. Members of both sexes were giving him once-overs on their way to the showers.
She bit back a laugh. "Again, I ask, are you kidding? Hell, yeah, it will." Needing to leave before she said more, she gathered her bag and beat a hasty retreat.

I enjoy writing fun romps and this one is well on the way to being one of those.

That's it for this week. Happy reading!

Sunday Snippet: Throw in the Towel

Greetings!

It's been a truly long week, but Strike Back remains a bright spot. I'm utterly fascinated by Dalton and how much she's crossing the line (if there is a line LOL)

I've also been rewatching Farscape on Pivot. I love it when newish channels air one of my favorite shows. Farscape ranks in my top five of all time winners.

Tonight's post is from a fun little romp. Throw in the Towel has humor, sexiness, and well, lots of mud. LOL

Here's the tagline:

Taurin Beach and Craig Wallmartin are top competitors on the mud run circuit. When Craig is caught by a reporter with nothing but a towel, it gives Taurin the perfect idea for catching his attention and finally getting what she wants. Him.

And the snippety peek…

"You really need to stop it with the dinky towel thing, Taurin." Craig blocked her path, not letting her leave the room.
She smirked. "Ah, Craig. I thought you liked almost showing everything."
Craig snorted. "You know mine was more accident than anything. Not my fault that stupid lady reporter shoved a microphone in my face before he had a chance to dry off." Taurin tilted her head sideways. "What's your problem, really?"
He pinned her with his gaze. "You're walking around half naked and it's like begging for trouble."
Taurin tsked. "You're not supposed to look, Craig. No one else is."
Craig snorted. "Yes, they are." No unspoken agreement would keep any red-blooded male from sneaking a look.
Taurin lifted a brow. "And you know this, how exactly?"
Craig pressed his lips together. Anything he said would get twisted by her bizarre sense of humor.
Taurin laughed. "Oh, my God, you're acting as the peeping police, now?"
Hell, he didn't have to speak for her to mangle the sentiment behind his actions.
He shrugged. "Someone has to watch out for you. You're too self-absorbed to pay attention."
Taurin let the towel slip a little and invaded his personal space. "Maybe you're just too slow to realize there's a specific someone whose attention I want."
Craig frowned. "Who?" Hell, it figured.
"Come on, Craig. Don't you remember third grade?" The terrycloth fabric slipped a little lower, revealing more skin. "What did girls do when they wanted a boy's attention?"
Craig's mouth opened…and closed again.
She chuckled. "Yeah, you get it now, right?" The towel dropped even lower, gaping open.
He reached forward, flicking the edge from her grip. The fabric dropped, pooling at her feet.
His fingers trailed down her shoulder, raising goose bumps on her flesh. "Why the subterfuge? All you had to do was say something."
Taurin rolled her eyes. "Where's the fun in that?" Stepping forward, she grabbed his shirt in her hands, tugging him inside the room. "I'm naked and you're not. Why not close the door and see what other entertaining things we can come up with?"
Craig grinned, kicking the door shut with his foot. "I'm definitely game for that."

Craig is game for a whole lot more, too. And he'll most definitely show Taurin how much of a good time she can have with him. :D

That's it for this week. Happy reading!
